I can tell you with absolute certainty that when commissioned, Seawolf's sonar dome was a sable brown.

        Hi Jim,

        You are absolutely correct!

        Hi Jim,

You are absolutely correct! It is, also, Flat boottop black to waterline, NATO black from waterline to centerline, and finally oxide red from centerline to keel. The top of the anhedrals are NATO black, which is a very deep charcoal grey.

          Hi all,

Thor, thanks for the pic - but what I'm looking is more to the painted boat .

but thanks for the info about this boat color.
Let me repeat to see that I'm get it right
          - Upper parts till water line: Flat Black
          - Waterline till Centerline: NAto Black (maybe I can use dark gray ?)
          - Centerline till bottom of hull: Oxide Red (is this the same with Hull Red ? or can I just use Maroon) ?

subdude, about sable brown, is it more to light gray ?

Thor, bravo for the Seawolf 1/96 model it is a GREAT model (but alas, I don't have enough money to purcase the boat ), so at this time I have to be satisfy with the resin static model.

Again guys, thanks v much really appreciate it

Did you follow Matt's link of

this link has various examples of the colour scheme (or color scheme depending on your nationality).

            >Waterline till Centerline: NAto Black (maybe I can use dark >gray ?)

What I did with my boat is just lighten the flat black a little with some white to generate the 3 tones of black.

Though I'm not into the nuke boats much, I believe that I heard Dave Merriman comment that Krylon's red oxide primer is pretty well a bang-on match for the US's anti-foul red. You should be able to find it at any hardware store.

Hope that helps. (and I hope I'm right!?!)

(after checking the link ) - Benjamin, it's a pleasure to meet you - thank you for the tips, yes I think I will try to mix the flat black with white, and your boat will be the reference to mine

Krylon's red oxide primer, now really that new to me, but Bob I will try to find this one. thanks.

oh yeah, I think the color scheme for my model is solve - anyone have a detail photo of the lower bow and stern ballast vent ? I'm thinking to re-scribe it on mine.

                  The color of the bow

The color of the bow sonar dome is a very recognizable color of brown. Jim is right when he called it "sable", but I prefer to think of it as "Hershey's chocolate"!!

                  (Yes, it's *that* brown)

                    as a reference.

For the anti-fouling red I used Tremclad's Red Oxide Primer (available in Canada, not sure if the US has Tremclad). I have used Krylon's Red Oxide Primer previously but I think they have changed their colour (color), as it seemed pretty brown.

My paint mixture ratios were as follows.

Flat black was used for the anti-skid surface.

In a 15 ml jar of flat black 2 ml of white was added for the section between the anti-skid surface and the water line.

In another 15 ml jar of flat black 4 ml of white was added for the section between the waterline and the centerline.

Hope your project works out for you !

                    Cheers

Benjamin, I'm not in US or Canada, I'm in Jakarta - Indonesia, hope to find the coat in ACE hardware here.

anyway to me it seems that Ben's boat is not painted with the 'Hearshey' Choco in her bow. (I've try to draw and paint the color on a piece of paper - the choco color seems not so matching with the other color ?) what do u think guys ?

                        Krylon is now Rutty Brown

Krylon is now Rutty Brown primer, Red Oxide is no longer available . I used italian Camo Brown #1 on my permit
Poly-S has replaced Hull Red with this color . Mix the color very well or you will get diffrent shades .

                          Can I use Tamiya's hull

                          Can I use Tamiya's hull red ?
I used to paint my model with spray paint (canned), now for this model (Seawolf), I'm considering to use the airbrush so I can mix some color to get the shade

Oh yeah after u guys paint your boat, do u apply clear coat ? or just leave it as it is ?

                            I found the Tamiya Hull

I found the Tamiya Hull Red more brown then red. I do in fact use this on my Seawolf for the hull mounted sonar domes.

As for the clearcoat the answer is yes, this is almost mandatory as the model is to operate in water. In your case I believe you are building a static kit, so it may not be required.

Nice I think I will do that (replacing sable brown) with Tamiya Hull Red

Yes I'm building the static model. I'm also thinking to add some weathering effect to it but I'm concerning about possible rust effect ? (I'm heard / read once that Seawolf class didn't use the Anechoic tile like the one in LA / LA(I) class ? instead of build as one ?), I think no rust will form due to no metal parts ?
