    Sturgeon resources

    Guys,
I am interested in getting a text on that focuses on Sturgeons in some degree of detail.

I have extensive bits and pieces on the Sturgeons within a few texts like the Polmar Cold War Submarines book, but is there a text that goes into more detail?

    Thanks

    John,

    Take a look at U.S.

    John,

Take a look at U.S. SUBMARINES SINCE 1945 An Illustrated Design History by Norman Friedman and illustrated by James L. Christley. Chapter 9, Nuclear Submarines: The Second Generation, has 19 pages on both the Thresher/Permit and Sturgeon classes along with photos that may help.

          Thanks Duane,
          do you have any

          Thanks Duane,
do you have any pictures of any Sturgeons where the upper bow (and presumably) the lower bow are painted a reddish colour?

I have seen a few models going around with this colour scheme and am wondering if it is correct for any time period with the Sturgeons.

          Thanks

          John

            Do you mean like

            John,
Do you mean like this? That is a launch photo. Probably not a paint job that was used operationally.

              John,
              Tom's correct. After PSA

              John,
Tom's correct. After PSA and/or first overhaul, the "as delivered" paint job was modified. The picture Tom included also shows the original steel bow dome. The Aspro picture in another reply shows the fiberglass dome that the Sturgeons received during overhauls and extended upkeeps during the '80s. The original paint for those domes was a deep chocolate brown. That's why my Trepang has a "brown nose". She got the 3rd 'glass dome installed on a 637. The first 2 had the black paint peel off as the drydocks were being flooded! The Navy changed the paint specification before our install, and we kept our paint when we floated off.
Many "brown nose" jokes ensued, and a good time was had by all!

              Hi, Tom!

              Take care,

              Bill
