    Japanese sub on base

I am looking for information on the Japanese mini sub on base at Groton.
I have not seen any pictures of it yet, but it sounds like a Kairyu.
It is not the Type A that was moved to the museum. This one is still on base, in front of building 83.
Does anyone have any information on this sub?
I have checked with the museum and the PAO on base with little info received.
I am hoping someone has some dope on the boat.
    Thanks

        I have pictures of it...somewhere.

I have pictures of it...somewhere. Took them back when the Regattas were on the base in Groton (probably late 1990's). That means it's not digital, so I would have to hunt for them.

It is in fact a Kairyu. For many years it was open to the elements as it had all manner of holes cut in the hull allowing the casual pedestrian to peer inside. After awhile it was beginning o look like a dumpster inside, besides the damage from exposure to the weather. The openings were plated over about the same time as the museum was being built for Nautilus' return. I used to walk by it every day when I taught Basic Enlisted Sub School. Bob Wallace had offered a picture package for the modeler back when he was making his kits. The pictures are of this particular boat. Bob is still an SC member (a/o 2008) and may still provide those pictures.

The museum may not realize what it is as the people that knew what to look for are no longer there. I believe that it is actually on loan to Subase, or SubScol, from the Navy Museum in Washington, DC.

          Take care,
          Bill
