SubCommittee Member 'registration'

    Folks,

One of the new features of our new forums is the ability to place individuals into 'groups' and then to provide different capabilities to the different groups. For example, we are considering creating SC member-only forums that would contain information accesable only to members. One thing that we have been thinking about is placing r/c sub construction articles from the SCR into a member-only forum.

    Hopefully you get the idea!

Anyway....you have probably noticed that underneath each poster's name (and avatar) is a lable that reads]jeffrey.larue@hp.com) the following information]

    I understand that it might

I understand that it might be good to have a "members only" area on the boards, but to start withholding valuable information from the general public might hurt the hobby more than it helps it. Typically the purpose of public forums is to foster the sharing of information, the more the better. I think for maybe personal club only discussions or perhaps club only events, I could see why only members could be allowed, but otherwise you might put people off of the hobby by limiting the information they have access to. Imagine if at Subregatta you allowed everyone to come, but only members could find out how to build, or some other crucial information. Now that wouldn't go over well, would it? Just my opinion!

      I have been a member

I have been a member of the SubCommittee for about 10 years. This new web site and its confining rules is B.S. I have tried to help people with their sub related questions on the General Forum, but I am not able to post my response. I get unaurthorized user, can't reply to messages.

I have tried to respond to the Swap Board in something I am interested in buying and I can't get through. I am not authorized. I have done somthing illegal!

I have tried to post some things I have for sale, and the board won't let me. The HELP button does nothing to tell me what I am doing wrong. This new setup sucks. I don't even know what #### button to push to get this posted?

        Tom,

        All you need to do

        Tom,

All you need to do is to ask for help....we'll be glad to walk you through whatever problems you might be having. There's no need to 'trash' the message board software.

The information that you included in your posting is not enough to go on. When did you last try posting and what was the error that you received. I'm assuming that before you tried to post something that you were logged onto the forum.....

Also, just a minor point.....it's been 7 years, the same year that I joined!

          Actually putting the build articles

Actually putting the build articles as a members only section would be great, by getting a membership you help maintain this website. (by the way, mine is in the mail somewhere).

Also, an option to get the report completely online as opposed to it being mailed would be great as well. So would an archive.

Just have people select whether they want access to the electronic version or receive a paper version. it would save the committee money in postage. Also, put up all the back issues of for those that want the electronic access. Then you can have a premium membership where you get both.

            I can't see the problem

I can't see the problem with having the 'member pages' available to members only. I may be jaded, being a member already, but I'd like to think that even if I weren't I'd realize that members should have certain priveledges that the general population doesn't get.

Posting SCR articles in this section is no different than mailing copies to member's homes. Do we mail everyone in the world a copy? No, and for good reason. There is a cost associated with doing so which is offset by membership fees that we collect.

Anyone visiting the site or these boards will find a valuable resource for obtaining information. The membership fee is a small price to pay for full access to the wealth of knowledge contained here, and anyone seriously interested in the hobby will join.

              Bob's right!

              Fewer and fewer organizations

              Bob's right!

Fewer and fewer organizations do it the way we do now. We should offer enough info to get new visitors excited, then motivate them to join by offering full access with subscription.
              Warm regards,

                Absolutely agree!

We're going to get there, but it will take time....or more accurately time or money.

What we cannot do ourselves in terms of upgrading the web site with volunteer help would have to be paid for.......

                      I would like to indicate

I would like to indicate my agreement with Bob the Builder and JW on member only status. After being a 'fellow traveller' for a number of years, I joined SubCommittee two years ago. Too many people want to benefit from the experiences and work put out by those who have gone before us. If you want to enjoy all the things that SubCommittee and it's members have to offer, join! It's a small price to pay.

                          I recently joined the SubCommittee

I recently joined the SubCommittee (yep I am a paid member of this group...), and I have followed the "help" topic on how to have my membership group here on the forum changed, but the list of "who's who" is broken (404 error). I sent an email to the webmaster telling him a) the link is broken, and b) can he upgrade my membership. No reply.

Without that link as to who is capable of updating my forum membership, and no response from the webmaster, how am I to get my membership status changed?

                          thanks

my email with its info is on its way, and thanks for re-iterating for us slow peoples what was in the original post, but, might I add that the webmaster alter the "help" topic, so that it reflects those same procedures, instead of directing one to a dead link?
