I remember reading about this
I remember reading about this when the cover story first came out, and even then I thought it was strange that they would go to such effort to get manganese nodules. I thought that there were simpler ways to get manganese. Sure enough years later we learn the truth. I think the cover blew because some documents were stolen from the Hughes facility and leaked to the press. As I recall the history Channel had a documentary on this.
Also I seem to recall that the Glomar Explorer was coming to port for an exhibit or tour several years ago. Wonder what happened to it? Maybe it's still in use?
Should be an interesting movie, thanks for the info and link.

The Glomar Explorer sat for about 20 years and then was converted to a deep ocean oil drilling ship. The conversion sealed over the moon pool and the derricks and other equipment were all replaced with drilling rig equipment. She looks like this now][/url]
