    Uboat Emblem colors--help needed

    Hey everyone,
I'm researching my u-boat subject, the U-744, and at the time of it's sinking had the 9th Flotilla Sawfish(blue) and the crest/shield of the city of Posen. I'm trying to get the colors down for the shield. The right side with the axe/mace is a black axe on yellow background . Does anyone have info on the left half?

The attached graphic appears to be the crest for the city of Posen (as opposed to the province of Posen):

...so I'd suggest pulling the colors from this.

It's (barely) possible that Georg Högel got this particular crest wrong. I haven't checked, but are there any photos of the U-744 showing the crest?

I have two sources; one is the photo(encl) and the second is the interrogation report from www.uboat archive.net which describes the shield(and swordfish). This description correlates with the drawing, except the photo perspective angle cuts off the left part of the shield..
The photo had to be lightened a bit..

I also have this which is also found in Warship Pictorial #27 (S.Wiper).(No crest). Does anyone know if this is just one of a series? This appears to be a returning picture. It does cut off the lower conning tower platform which should show a quad 20mm. It was replaced with a 37mm just before her last patrol.

            Hmmm......perhaps the text:

"Shield with black axe on yellow ground; and coat of arms of Posen. Flotilla badge blue sawfish"

...could mean that there were three emblems on the tower?? The grammar in these reports is sometimes a bit fractured. Seems a bit of a stretch though......

Yeah Jeff, I'm thinking it's one shield of the split type variety. The capture photo shows the shield with the "axe" on the right side..

Not sure if this helps.....but here's something I found on the Sharkhunters web site: http://www.sharkhunters.com/historya.htm

It's a different boat, but it claims that it carried the crest of the city of Posen.

                  Thanks Jeff,
It's a puzzler. That is the whole crest of Posen. The question is did they use a split variety(which I've seen on another U-boat)? The photo corresponds with Hogel's drawing. Do you have his book (with errata) and does he explain the particular crest design of the 744?
