    Thinking ahead....

Next year I'm going to build me a bigger version of my favourite boat, the U-Flak U-441. I did a small one years ago, but this time I want to build it again in something like 1/32nd or 1/48th scale.

Any pictures/links/information on the Flak type conning tower would be gratefully received...I have a few small pics but nothing really decent to work from.

    Thanking you in advance....

      I know Jeff, I struggled

I know Jeff, I struggled last time with detail pics and that was without the internet. I'm at a loss really as to why the U-Flak boats weren't photographed more, it seems a bit strange to me that the German submarine forces didn't want to show off their creations a bit more, unless they were worried about secrecy. Shame, doesn't help me much!

Thanks for what you've sent me, I appreciate that...there was one I didn't have.

Good thing I have plenty of time before U-Flak 1 hits the slipway, U-212 needs to be finished first.

      Regards,

      Rich

        Rich,

From my reading on the subject, the Kriegsmarine didn't leave those U-boats in the Flak-boat configurations for very long. Funny thing......but fighting it out on the surface doesn't work to well. That definitely limited the time during which photos could have been taken.

          They sure were great looking

They sure were great looking boats though no matter how impractical they have real appeal with all those guns. I'd love to have a 6-7 ft. model.

            Steve,

            Definitely! Wouldn't it be great

            Steve,

Definitely! Wouldn't it be great to see something like an OTW Type VIIC done up as a flak-boat?

                  Gentlemen, I thank you all...information

Gentlemen, I thank you all...information on the U-Flak boats is as rare as hens teeth it seems.

The plan is to acquire either a 32nd Parallel hull or an OTW one, and scratch build/modify the conning tower to the U-Flak 1 type. The small one I made years ago was built on an original Krick U25 hull, the wooden bread and butter one...it sort of looked like a Flak Trap boat, but this time I want to do a proper job. 1/32nd scale would be nice, I could even get the guns revolving in that scale, and with a decent sound effect board it should be able to scare off the local anti-sub airbourne patrols, otherwise known as ducks.
I had all sorts of problems with U-117, even at nine feet in length I suffered a lot of aerial attacks from the local geese. A word of warning to you all...geese hate U-Boats! Their depth charges can make an awful mess on a U-Boat deck.....
