    I personally like to use

I personally like to use an industrial epoxy primer on white metal. I don't etch it but do sand to roughen the surface prior to painting. After years of service I've never had the paint fail -- even on props which take a fair amount of abuse.

If you use epoxy primer, make sure you thoroughly sand it prior to applying the finish coat if the primer has cured for more than two weeks (approx). If you don't, then you can have trouble with the finish coat adhering to the primer.

Have you checked out the seawolf build in the build thread section. There is a section of it where wayne shows the best way to do a white metal prop using pcb to etch the surface. Think he even included the part number for radio shack.

        Rick,
If you know anyone that does stained glass for a hobby, ask them if they have any black or copper patina. This is a chemical that stains metal or solder for the glass work.
I haven't tried it on pot metal or whatever your prop is made from so test first. I use it on brass and copper with great results.
