I DID THE HUNLEY AND THE CLAMAGORE

Over the past two days, my wife and I have clambered over the Hunley and the USS Clamagore in Charleston.
Carol and I often stay in Charleston on our annual trips to and from New York to Florida, and Kevin Price recently told me of the existence of these two wonderful submarines. I guess being a Limey in the USA has its disadvantages - we just don't take these things for granted and are blind in our ignorance.

I tripped over two submarines in Halifax NS a couple of summers ago, and actually crawled through the bowels of the USS Drum in Mobile, Alabama, the year prior. My dad and I went over the boats moored in Gosport UK about twenty years ago.

I just love the smell of a WWII boat, the diesel, oil and age of them - really neat.

So, my question to you guys is - how many more of these boats are there on display? Perhaps we should make a thread of 'world-wide' submarine exhibits?

Lets make a list of them, maps, directions, photos, GPS, etc, etc.
Perhaps we could even list the sites where scuba divers are visiting these wonderful relics? Isn't there one in Key West?

Navy stuff generally is of great interest to me. My second most exciting exhibit was the Marie Rose, King Henry VIII's flag ship, sunk on her maiden voyage in Portsmouth. IF YOU HAVE SALT WATER IN YOUR VEINS YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS BEFORE YOU DIE!

Best of all, HMS Victory, Nelson's Flagship, because my grandfather's photo of him is in uniform with HMS Victory emblazoned on his hat! Figure that one out!

    Mike,
    If you ever make it

    Mike,
If you ever make it out to Boston we have the ALBACORE just to the north in Portsmouth NH, and Battleship Cove with LIONFISH just to the south in Fall River. There is also the Rooskie boat down near Providence RI, but not sure what state it's in after the sinking.

      Mike,
In your dreams you clambered over the Hunley. They guard that thing like Fort Knox, and they only let you look at it with one eye at a time!

Seriously, here are links to all the submarines on display that are members of the Historic Naval Ship's Association - just about all of them in the world!

            ALBION! Singapore eh?

My dad's White Ensign from HMS Sibyl is with Chandra Mohan mohan83mcm@pacific.net.sg -- I think he donated it to a museum.

If he didn't - tell him I'll buy it back.

This flag flew at the relief of Singapore when it was relieved from the Japs.
My dad HATED the Japs for the condition he saw his British and Australian mates in after five year in CHanghi.

HMS Sibyl was the first submarine to surface in Singapore harbour at The Relief. Sybil gunned down at least 14 Jap ships in the Mallaca Straights. She was depth charged and shot at from Jap planes for her trouble.

I hate those subs that everyone likes that never fired a shot in anger.
No Jolly Roger? Never worth the trouble to reproduce as a model!

I still havent seen the flag yet, i really must get my ass in there.

The Mallacca straits was a hotbed of action during the war, Brits subs having a lot of success there.

USS Requin SS-481 is the old Tench / Fleet boat on display in Pittsburgh I used to "clamber" aboard it myself many times 20 years ago when it was berthed in the Hillsborough River directly across from the University of Tampa where I attended school. The tour at that time was self-directed & you typically had the sub all to yourself - I spent over 2 hours in her the first time & remember having the old guy in the shack outside come down looking for me thinking I fell asleep. http://www.geocities.com/uss_requin/index.html

For anyone passing through Hawaii, USS Bowfin SS-287 at Pearl Harbor is a must see for both the sub as well as the sub museum which includes a kaiten. I highly recommend it along with all else there is to see at Pearl. Their website with its interactive tour ain't bad either. http://www.bowfin.org/website/index.cfm.
