    Type XXI Question - Hawsepipe/anchor?

Can anyone identify what this detail actually is or does. The closest I have got is in Anatomy of a ship book for the type XXI. All it states is "Hawsepipe cover - removable".
What is a hawsepipe? Is it the anchor? Just that I noticed there doesn't appear to be an anchor anywhere on the type XXI. But this "cover"is near the location for the anchor on other U-boat designs so...

I also notice that in pictures of type XXI's tied up, the mooring ropes are usually attatched to the large towing eye on the fore deck.

Any one shed some light on this for me please?

Yes, the anchor is underneath that cover. notice in that photo, some of the drain slots openings beneath it have been welded over? that was to prevent the anchor or chain from hanging and banging against the openings...

      Ah thanks Sam. So the

Ah thanks Sam. So the anchor is under there. Yes I had noticed flood holes being covered and then painted over (in lots of pics). I didn't know why they did this. That's a great explanation, thanks.

Anatomy of the ship series is very good at minute detail, but this one (the anchor) they missed.

Also I looked up "Hawsepipe" on Wiki, this is what it says...
"The hole through which an anchor rope passes is known as a hawsepipe."

I just like to understand what the various details are on a sub.
Recently I got the anatomy book for the type XXI and it's got me all interested in this design.
Looks like I will also be inheriting a type XXI hull soon as a friend is having a clear out . So I will enjoy going to town superdetailing this R/C sub hull.

We discussed this issue here too:

I have never seen a photo of a XXI anchor. Maybe some of the boats has it and some not.
Good point on the drain slots!
