    Do you race them????

How many times have people asked that questions? Well, why not? If I recall, there was supposed to be a plan to have sub races at the last regatta in Indy. As far as I know, everyone chickened out because they know they can't beat Matt Munger's bullet sub. Isn't that correct Matt? Isn't yours the fastest? ('')

There are a lot of different ways this event could be done. It could be single attempts for best speed, could be elimination pair races like a dragstrip or a flat out Lemans races around the bouys. Crowds love that one because the possibility of massive crashes is increased.

What about a conning course? One guys gives the directions for surface running and the other guy (with his back to the boat) steers it. The only diving you do is to accomplish periscope depth within a certain amount of time. The steering competition can still be done but it doesn't seem to draw the interest that I thought it would.

If you want to see a club that has gone all out check this out.

People like to see action. A large amount of the time, the subs sit on the table. If you want spectators at an event you have to give them what they ask for. The regatta is a great event for the modeling group and we like that because we get to talk among peers and show what we have built even if it isn't ready to run. We also have to bring people into the hobby which is the tough part.

We have time to develop new events and get our boats ready.

All comments welcome and all suggestions encouraged!!

    well, if you want action

well, if you want action (without pyrotechnics)...

how about blowing up 2 balloons (long ones) and sink them
a few inches into the water with a chunck of lead, so part of it stays
above water. Place them on opposite sides of the pond.

Now mount a needle or another sharp point onto the bow of the 2
    competing boats.

next the captains have to pop the balloon on the other side, while the
captain there tries to do the same. whichever side pops the other side's
balloons first wins. a popping balloon in the water should make some splash

The difficulty would be to precisely steer your boat at quite some
distance while submerged at periscope depth.

There, from the top of my hat, never tried it myself, happy it isn't my
    boat competing

Raalst seems to have an interesting idea.

I've always imagined underwater racing where the subs have to run through rings. Maybe something as simple as two rings a few feet below the surface on opposite ends of the pool. This would be like underwater pylon racing. The only complication is that there would need to be an underwater window or something where the competitors stand in front of. Maybe this would be good for a SeaWorld pool!

        I would have to bow

I would have to bow to Big Dave on the speed issue, if only he could keep from smashing his control surfaces!!

I would also welcome any suggestions/help in the course(s) this year. As I recall a simple two buoy race course was discussed, but did not materialize last year.

Assuming the competitors had an underwater window, APCs, heading hold gyros, and other swim-by-wire electronics should be banned, in my opinion. Perhaps dual rates on the transmitter will be the only electronic "helper" allowed.

I just think it would be fascinating to design subs for speed, maneuverability, and control, instead of just scale fidelity.

              I do seem

I do seem to have a control surface problem!!
              Crazy Driver!!
It is very hard to control when they are going about warp speed, the pool is so shallow, and has a hard bottom.
Actually I am designing a race sub for possible production now. It had its first test Sunday night at the YMCA and it went well.
Believe it or not I did not even break one surface.
It is called the WaterSlider. It is incredibly fast and will turn so tight it will kink your neck.
It is like a 3D plane for the water.
I was going to wait and do some more testing before showing it but now is a good a time as any. It will depend on how the testing goes if I actually sell a kit. Steamboy got some great footage at the Y run and I am working on a video to post. I will have it at the regatta to show. BD.
BTW-Here are a few photos of the prototype. No paint yet.

                Looks like a fun boat.

Looks like a fun boat. I see you have decided to fit the canopy. Will you make it a split screen?
