CALLING ALL BRITS - NEED DIMENSIONS HELP!!!

    I'm stuck!

I've just noticed that the dimensions or scale on the Darnel models don't seem to be correct, or does my calculator need winding up?

    P Class

    # Scale = 1 to 50
    # Model Length = 55 3/4"

    = 232 feet long

    T Class
http://www.caswellplating.com/models/biber.html scroll down for the T

    # Scale = 1 to 48
    # Model Length = 68 1/2"
    = 274 feet

So if the P Class is actually an old converted T Class, (Slippery T) how did it get shortened so much?

    What did I miss here?

    I’m confused.

    The "Super" ( the lengthened

The "Super" ( the lengthened and streamlined - UK version of GUPPY ) T class were 294ft and the Porpoise class were 290ft Mike

So that makes my P Class a 1:62 scale if the model is 55 3/4" long and the real thing is 290 feet. That is really weird, isn't it?

I have no idea how accurate this data is, but I found this web site:

          I'm not sure about the

I'm not sure about the exact dimensions of these boats, but I can tell you that the Darnell boats were never 100% faithful scale replicas.

What they provide is a decent rendition of their respective boats, at a price which won't dent the pocket too much.

If you want very high accuarcy, then an OTW is closer to the truth. Or DIY.

            I am particularly interested

            Andy

I am particularly interested in scaling the P, purely to determine what their intent was. I can't imagine that Darnell was off to the tune of some SIXTY feet, yet the models dimensions @ 1:50 scale say so. Recalculated at 55.75" & 290 feet, the scale becomes 1:62 - really weird.

My T & S class scales seem to be spot on. Having said that, the S Class varied tremendously from boat to boat, and most boats were altered several times. To say anyone's model is a true replica of any type boat is extremely hard.
S Class in particular, had numerous variations on the conning tower shape, extra torpedo on the stern, different gun, no gun, bandstand, no bandstand etc. etc. With some fifty boat changing design like the weather, and then being further modified throughout their life, makes it almost impossible to say, "This is a true representation of an S Class." (But you knew that! )

The sail on Darnell's P Class looks like it was a short version, more like HMS Narwhal. At his scale of 232 feet, it looks like Darnell could have used an S Class mold and converted that, but why? All his other models are extremely accurate.

shows the dimension to be 290 feet long.

Yep! Understood! I got caught on that one too! I think they did it to confuse the enemy - it certainly worked on me!
