There is roughly just over an hour of color US Fleet Boat footage at the following website:
This is raw, unedited footage made late in the war. It includes (in the second selection) lots of color shots of passes at sea by the USS Bowfin. Lots of shots of various fleet subs, some fairly battered paint jobs. Some footage is mundane (tieing up alongside, eating apples after patrol), but still worthwhile. It really brings "alive" many of the things you read in books about WWII Fleet submarine service.
The third selection leads off with awards, and you see Admiral Charles Lockwood and Admiral Chester Nimitz (in shorts!) coming aboard to congratulate the crew and hand out medals. There is also footage from USS Skate, USS Seadog, and others, although it is all labeled "Bowfin". One segment has Skate pulling survivors of a torpedoed ship from the water. Other footage is Skate in rough seas and gunnery practice . Most is very high quality color footage, a minor part is out of focus. It's reminscent of the old "Silent Service" films, but all in color. Great Fleet Sub modeling details.
You DEFINITELY want to check this out!
