    Wahoo War Flag Waves Again!

    Hi guys!

Thought you sub history buffs -- and particularly Wahoo (SS-238) aficionados -- would appreciate seeing the custom reproduction I just had made of the Wahoo battle flag originally sewn by the very capable digits of Mush Morton himself. Paul Crozier and I saw the original flag on display at the Bowfin Museum at Pearl Harbor last fall. Also on display there was a handsome reproduction of the flag which had been previously hanging inside the ComSubPac Admin. Bldg. on base. This is what inspired me to have my own version created, adding the boat name and hull number, plus her loss date.

The REASON I did this was for a little inspiration. Some of you are aware that an on-again/off-again project has long been in the works to create a detailed 1/48 kit of the Wahoo, involving the likes of Matt Thor, Paul Crozier, Jeff LaRue and others -- even a commitment from Dave Merriman at one point (though I'm not certain of his current interest). At any rate, after I fly this flag here in So. Cal. a short while, my plan is to send it along Round Robin-style to the various participants in the project, hoping they'll likewise photograph it flying from their homes and then post those images here. In this way it'll become a kind of garden gnome traveler, spreading Wahoo good will and promoting the cause of submarine history and models at the same time -- not to mention turning up in fun photos from all over the country. (By the way, I credit SubRon5 buddy Tom Kisler with this cool idea.)

Finally, I had this flag made simply to honor Wahoo's memory, of course, and as such it shall fly over SubRon5 and perhaps other events as well; certainly we'll bring it along to hang over our area at the Regatta this year. Having researched Wahoo's history much of his life, Paul's SC message board avatar is this now familiar flag art, so it obviously makes sense this flag should be something of our group's mascot image.

Completing the flag pictures above is my Saturn's license plate -- a nod to my late friend, Forest Sterling. Hope you like the photos everyone; stay tuned for more!

    Jeff,

I think your "garden gnome" flag idea is pretty cool.
I hope the Wahoo project makes it to some ponds and the odd pool.

      Looks AWESOME Jeff!

You give me far to much credit however. My role was more of an "enabler" here but I'm glad it turned out so well after a rocky start. Looks like they finally "got it" down at the Ye Olde flag Shoppe huh?

Looking forward to its proud display at the upcoming SunNFun.

Briefly, gang, in the "Small World" dept.:

When I went to pick up this completed flag from the shop which had processed the custom order for me, I took along some Wahoo-related documents (photos of the original flag on display at Pearl, the story of my meeting Forest Sterling, etc.), just to give my kindly proprietress some idea of what this highly unusual order had been all about. She was not only very interested (never having reproduced WWII battle flags before!), but as it turned out, was just on her way at that moment to a family gathering honoring a cousin, David D. Mericle, who had served in multiple subs through the Cold War era (USS Boise and Gurnard among them) -- even skippering one (though she couldn't remember which was that particular boat).

I heard from her again today, noting that the Wahoo photos and related stuff I'd left with her had been well understood and much appreciated by Capt. Mericle, who must have known well of Wahoo's legacy.

Obviously, this project was simply meant to be.

The Wahoo flag surfaced at my house on Memorial Day. I'll be handing it off to Jeff at the Batfish meet on July 4th weekend -- where we will also display it.

          Warm regards,

            Be sure to bring it

Be sure to bring it to the SubRegatta this year, Jeff. Mush Morton's neice who said she was going to stop by, would certainly enjoy seeing it.

As I will be bringing the Wahoo flag with me to SubRegatta I thought I'd see how it looks flying over the ol' homeport here first. Not bad.

Wahoo, Nebraska is on the way from here to Carmel and I will be stopping at the small, but sincere, memorial the town has erected in honor of this lost boat for another photo-op while I'm still in possession.

Thanks, Tom -- what a super idea!

Forgot to post a shot earlier of the Wahoo flag flying at our Batfish event last weekend. I doubt the ol' girl was TOO jealous of our unfurling the battle emblem of her famous sister . . .

                    I'm long overdue to post

I'm long overdue to post this next image, but as always, better late than never. Yes, per Tim Smalley's suggestion above and of course per our original plan to begin with, the SubRon 5 contingent in attendance at the Regatta this year indeed unfurled and flew the Wahoo flag as shown below, hanging from the edge of the Big Top tent.

Next in line to receive it Round Robin-style is Jeff LaRue, once he eventually lets me know he's back at work on his 1/48 scale photoetched Wahoo deck and is looking for a little inspiration.

Meanwhile, you can all be assured I'll again be flying the flag here in La Mirada on the the mighty Wahoo's October 11th loss date anniversary.
