    Pre WW1 "K" Class Submarine

Can anyone help in locating plans, drawings, etc. for the old "K" Class submarine?
These babies were steam powered and had two funnels that needed to be "folded" into the deck before submerging.
I'm wanting to scratch build one in 1/72 scale (or larger) and have as a full static diving model.

If Carlsberg made ship plans, they'd be John Lamberts- very good indeed.

Also if you want to have a read about the K boats, there is a very good book on them that reads better than many a thriller. Bloody things killed more of our own men than who we were fighting!

BTW Mike Caswell is building an M1, and the hull of the M1 was a converted K-boat hull. Maybe you could work a deal with mike on a hull?

Again, the SubCommittee members come to the rescue.
Thanks for that. I've ordered a set of plans from John Lambert, ordered the books from Amazon.com and am now looking for the contact details for Mike Caswell. I'd like to contact him about a hull (if he's building one) and to what scale he's building it.

I hope everyone has a great New Year.

Dave, this is one cool piece of old tech!

Of course, we expect to see those funnels folding on the model too

          Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the pressure!!!!!!!!
I reckon that folding funnels will be the hard part. I've already got an idea for smoke generation. Before I sold my 1/72 scale Canadian Destroyer, HMCS Haida I used incense sticks in the funnels. I dropped a small amount of machine oil on eash stick and lit them to generate really strong, white smoke. I had the nicest smelling workshop in the country.......

I'm planning on using the same method for the "K" class and I'll not be concerned when she submerges and drowns the incense sticks. All this, and I haven't even got the plans yet!!!!!!!!!!

I really don't think there'll be much more work done on the I-400 now.

Can someone let Mike Caswell know that I'm trying to contact him please?

          Ta.

            I've seen some smoke generators

I've seen some smoke generators that use water vapour (yes really!!). They look the part and would probably work well in a K-class.

The nice part is that you can switch them on and off at will, there is no heat involved, and no smell. Unfortunately the company that was making them JJC electronics seemed to have shut up shop.

There is talk of someone else making them in the foreseeable future though.

You can read more about these 'smoke' generators here-

            http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/ ... opic=368.0

If you fancy experimenting. Then you can have a go yourself. The units were based around a water fogger used for water features. Maplin sell such a unit, and you need to couple this to a computer fan to pump the 'smoke' out of the funnel. A centrifugal fan that they fit on modern graphics cards would be ideal (i.e. Nvidia Geforce cards)

              Mike Caswell

              You rang?

What a NEAT idea - a K class with steam! Wonderful! The more I research the British submarine history, the more fascinating it becomes. Steam subs, 12" guns, flying airplanes off the sub deck, minelayers, conning towers to sail, 'Slippery Ts' and more.
I reckon there must be over 100 versions of each S & T class as each commander was almost given carte blanche as to design and modification of his boat. Well, it certainly seems that way, and I do vaguely recall Stephen Jenner saying so. I'll have to ask him.

Build it in 1:72 and make sure we can vacu form from it.

BTW - If anyone needs to contact Mike Caswell (kazzer) via email or see his web site (it is listed on his above post). He is also listed under Caswell Plating on the SC Vendors KITS listing - http://www.subcommittee.com/SubComm/vendors.cfm

A smoke belching K-class would be a very cool RC sub!

                Happy new Year everyone!!!

There are a couple of working k-class models in the UK. Both electric AFAIK, I've only seen them in pictures though.

The late Nick Burge created a steam turbine submersible many years ago. Just the top of the twin funnels stay above the water to allow the flash steam boilers to breath.

I saw this model, and did have an opportunity to own it, but considered it was a little large for the water I sail in.

                        Smoke Generator

SC member Dan Lewandowski figured out how to make a high-output smoke generator for his tugs. Might be just the ticket for a K class!

Here is the writeup he did for the local scale club newsletter. Dan said he'd be happy to answer any questions about it. Email him at DPLewandowski@comcast.net (posted with Dan's permission.)

I'd like to find out if another hull is available for one.
The more I find out about these "K" Class boats, the more I want to build one.

The K4 in the photo above looks like a decent scale. Does anyone know what scale it is?

                            I think that was built

I think that was built by Bob one of our club members at Barrow. He is heavily into steam and actually worked on one of the last X craft (At 1: 1 scale!)

It is scratch built but I'm not sure of the scale.

Unfortunately he is not emailable but I will ask him when I see him next at the pondside.

He will be delighted to be helping someone from Australia.

He has given me a set of brochures produced by Vickers. The one on the K class has some interesting photos including one of K4 stuck out of the water on a sandbank (oops!) It also shows that not everything was bad about the K's. K26 went out to Singapore in 1924 on a world cruise and she only came out of service on 1931.

It is only about 4 pages long and I will try to scan it for you. Email me separately.

                              I've now spoken with Bob

I've now spoken with Bob about his K class. (We spoke in the club house not the pond side - It's warmer!)

He is not sure about the scale but it was the John Lambert plan multiplied or divided by 2!

He would thoroughtly recommend the Lambert plans for anyone doing the K.
