Hey all,
During our Remembrance Day (Veteran's Day) cerimony, a very golden opportunity was presented to me in that a Canadian Navy veteran was present AND telling stories of his time hunting U-Boats off the coast of New Foundland and how he spent 3 years escorting convoys across the Atlantic. He likened the missions he was on as "keeping the wolves at bay", with the analogy of the Wolf pack of the U-Boats and the "sheep" being the transports all herded in the convoy. "I don't think we sank a damn thing, but we sure kept them on their toes. Ahhh....it used to be quite a thrill going hunting for U-Boats. We never thought for a second they could get us too, you just didn't think of those things." He was like a living story book, I sat and listened all day. I hope we appreciate these living treasures as much as we can before they are all gone forever. Some are very willing to tell of their experiences during the war.....others....not so much so.
