    Both Sheerline and OTW are

Both Sheerline and OTW are excellant vendors and with good pre and aftersales support. Both are happy to give advice on the phone. The Sheerline kit is significantly cheaper with the included WTC & ballast system but is not quite exact scale and has less detail than the OTW kit, which is pretty much museum quality when built right. Both should cost the same to deliver, about £35, even thought OTW subs are built a little closer to Scotland than Sheerline

      I've seen both close up.

I've seen both close up. The OTW is a much better model IMO.

The Sheerline boat is a smaller boat, which may or may not be to your taste. One thing I really dislike is the massive over scale rivet detail on this model.

Also the boat looks too broad across the beam to my eyes.

The OTW nee Hartshorn boat, on the other hand has very fine rivet detail, which you can view when the model is close-up, but gradually disappears when the model is on the water- just like the 1:1 version!

The other alternative is the Engel Type VII, which looks like a stunning model too. Most expensive of the the three however, and I still prefer the OTW, as the hull has a slightly 'used' look to it that suggests the boat has seen a bit of action.

          Well OTW supply a custom

Well OTW supply a custom made wtc for the Type VII, which is shown on their website. Not cheap however, about £700 I think. It uses a pumped water ballast system, a bit different in principle to the Sheerline boats.

Combined cost for the Type VII and wtc is about £1500 I think.

The other alternative is a D & E wtc, SWM wtc or to DIY your own with whatever ballast system you choose i.e. piston tanks, compressed air, water pump etc. etc.

One chap in Norwich successfully installed a Sheerline wtc in an OTW Type VII, so that's another possibility.
