I notice that a lot of builders are building in scales smaller than 1/96. Some not only convert plastic model kits, some build hulls in 1/144-200 scale either vacuform or GRP. Is it me or is the shrinking trend nowadays

I suspect that the "shrinking
I suspect that the "shrinking trend" has to do mostly with logistics. Smaller boats are easy to transport, launch (no double hernia hauling it to and from the water), and store at home. In some respects, they are probably less expensive to build, as well.
My biggest boat is 57 inches, and I simply wouldn't want a bigger model. The work to fun ratio gets out of hand pretty fast as the boats increase in size, and since we run our boats fairly close to the transmitter (ourselves), a person really doesn't need to have a boat that can be spotted in the water from a mile away.
Just my two bits worth.

Smaller Boats.....
I Thought Of Building Smaller.Hummmmm!.....That Thought Soon Passed.
I NEED The Bigger Boat Models!!!!!! And Yes Bigger Is Sometime Not Always Better But With Me, It's The Way To Go If You Run In Rough (wind driven) Water Or Grey Overcast Days Where The Boat Disappears In The Wave Effects, and Least But Not Last, When That Proverbial Personnage Appears And Asks,"Mister Is That A Submarine Out There".....In A Shrill Voice ......Taking Your Eyes And Concentration Momentarily "Off The Boat". Bigger Will Give You that Ability To Do A Quick Surface Scan And "Re-Acquire" the Model. Granted, If You Build What You Like.....You Get Educated As To How Far Away You Run...Safely, The Boat's Overall Response To The Controls And What Your Abilities Need To Be To Make It Do What You Want, When You Want..... But Larger Sized Models Make It More Enjoyable. It Keeps You Focused!!!!!!

The availability and low price
The availability and low price of miniature RC these days makes miniature submarines a great deal more practical than a few years ago.
It's the demand by electric aeroplanes of the park flyer style and indoor flying that has pushed the envelope, and this has trickled down to model submariners.
At the same time, there have been a plethora of larger scale plastic kits ripe for conversion to RC that make a cost effective entry to the hobby.
