    British boats below the waterline.

    Hello all,

Why is it nearly impossible to get hold of dry dock photo's of British nuclear boats that ARE NO LONGER IN SERVICE? I would love to build a Resolution or Valiant but cannot for the life of me get any pics of these boats in dry dock. What is their problem!!!!

Why is their soo little info on these boats 15 years after they were DECOMMISSIONED!!!! I can get more info on boats that are currently in service!! Great dry dock pics of Vanguard.

I've got this whinge of my chest now....

can someone explain this logic to me...
    regards

    Simple answer- we're very secretive!

As a UK citizen, it's much easier for me to obtain information on Russian or American boats than our own!

Bombers seem to be much more closely guarded than Attack boats, for obvious reasons.

However, excellent plans exist for the Resolution class, available from Jecobin-

    http://www.jecobinplans.com/estore/index.php?

Also there is a really nice, and accurate Valiant kit available from OTW.

Not sure about plans, but if you wanted to scratch one in a different scale, then have a word with Bob Dimmack at OTW, and he may be able to give you a few pointers as to where to find some prints.

      Andy,

Yes I understand however these boats have been DECOMMISSIONED for 15 years , there's no good reason for this...

There's no justification for the continued secrecy. I just want to see the full hull. I'm not asking for a tour of the reactor compartment!!

How do we know the plans are accurate?

      thanks for your time

Well it's pointless moaning about our laws, it'll be 50 years (at least) before we have all the answers to these boats, and I don't think the MOD will be shifting their stance to satisfy a few modelmakers.

The plans are accurate enough in my opinion. If 100% authenticity is the only thing that will suffice, then I suggest building a craft from another country.

BTW there is HMS Courageous which can be viewed in dry dock, although the website seems to have disappeared.

I have the same dissapointment. I tried to figure out the real shape of the Churchill class and thanks to Rob Dimmack and the guys from the Courageous association and some photos from different angles I think I know it know... but for Resolution class dry dock photos I've seen only launching photos... they rival the new chinese SSBN class...

I know what you mean. This is the first pic of a Res out of the water I've ever seen! and it is from a book called "HM Submarines in Camera" I recently picked up.
Even in launch photos they often seem to have large 'shields' clamped around the sonar. I always wondered how long those bulky things stay on. ..Presumably they are purely there to stop anyone seeing something important (like what!?). Although I noticed with the launch of the new Vanguards now they simply have a cloth draped over the front like the American launches. ...Curious.

              That book has excellent and

That book has excellent and unique photos of british subs.
British ships have that area covered when launched. I think they covered the sonar windows and how it blends to the hull. If you look at launching photos of the Upholder class and recently released ones of the Victoria (ex-Upholder class) you can see what was behind those covers.
