    Painting the Vesikko CV-707

I am in the final stages of building this model and needs some help with determining the various paint schemes for the boat.
As you can see in one of the photos, one scheme is a black and white dazzle style of painting. The other is a combination of colors that I can't clearly identify. Anyone have a best guess as to what the possibly 3 or 4 colors might be? I appreciate the help.

    Hi Dave,

    I'm looking forward to

    Hi Dave,

I'm looking forward to seeing your Vesikko running!

I think that last photo shows the boat with two colors.....the third looks to be some sort of camouflague neeting drapped over it, which gives the appearance of a third color or shade. Given that it is a black & white photo, I would speculate that the two colors are either the same light and dark greys normally used on U-boats......or it's a combination of the light grey and slightly blue dark grey seen on some of the Mediterranean boats.

My bet would be the light/dark grey since the CV-707 only saw service in northern waters.....

      More Info

I sent the same question to a guy in Finland who is writing a book about the CV-707 and here is his reply. I thought the color scheme listed by Jeff made sense but here is his answer:

Your ideas about the color schemes are quite right.
The first photo (BW_camo) was taken in spring 1943. The colors are black, white and red anti foul. There is a yellow horizontal stripe on the conning tower. This pattern was used from mid 1942 to mid 1943.

Two others were taken during summer 1941. In 1941 Colors are black, light and dark grey, brown and green. In both patterns the deck was dark wood or tar color. The pattern was user only in 1941.

Tones are a problem. Nobody knows the exact colors, because there were no exact orders about them.

        Most interesting! A sub painted

Most interesting! A sub painted in a "woodland" camouflage scheme? I guess they expected to keep it tied up at the pier most of the time.

This will make for a very different looking model sub. I hope you go for the this paint scheme.

          The black and white is

The black and white is cool too, Dave. This would also be very unique; very stark and dramatic. I think it would also look rather menacing running around the Carmel pond.
