The red Stuff - Red "anti- foul"?

    Dear all,

Couple of questions for those in the know.

Why is the underside of most nukes painted red?

Do propeller shafts on Nuke boats leak? Are they totally waterproof. How often do they check them? Is it a constant problem or do they pretty much have the problem "licked."

Call me nerdy but i'm really interested in the technology behind keeping the big boats free of water.

      Hi guy's
Not sure about the shafts on the nukes but the Collins class has a packing gland and yes it does leak. One of the engineers was telling me that on a deep dive test, it leaked at the very scientific rate of 6 buckets a minute which is a lot of water. Not sure if this was a successful test or a failure.

          David H-

If you are still wondering about how the shafts are sealed on real boats, I read that they use pressurized water to keep the sea water out. So there is always some water in the bilges.

May I ask another question here? In the same book, it says]http://www.subcommittee.com/forum/icon_question.gif[/img]

The book kinda makes it sound like the prop does very little at all. Or maybe that's just my problem
