The submarine uses advanced Mobius Strip technology such that the interior, as seen on the show, is much larger than the exterior, even allowing for much of the hull being submerged. It looks like a mutated version of the new German Type 212, perhaps mated with a Swedish submarine.
from my experience, in a real subs, even the big ones, you can't turn around with a backpack on your back. The tables are tiny and you have great problems to find a place to take shot with a camera. Light conditions are dreadful as well. Film producers hate those conditions - they're almost useless to make a film. So they're always cheating - making the interiors in their studios much bigger then they are in reality.
BTW, in reality, no real sub of this size has ANY place to sit like it is shown in the screenshot - on sub of this size you would be greatfull for a foldable table with size of a bigger chess-board and a foldable chair. Am I wrong?
some people over at the LOST forums were saying that the interior shots were filmed on the USS Wahoo, which would explain the huge interior and the little exterior.
