    problem with missile firing pin

I’m in the process of manufacturing a missile. I have followed a number of guides illustrating the process but, I’m having no end of trouble getting an air tight seal around the firing pin.

Is there an optimum firing pin size?

Or has anyone got an idiot proof guide for construction?

    Maybe I can assist?

    Hi,
I would like to do the same (add missiles) to my sub. If you can send me a drawing of how you are attempting to do the construction, maybe I can come up with some suggestions. One suggestion off the top of my head is to "sleeve" the nozzle so you would be working with a slightly larger diameter.

      Matt Spade wrote a great

Matt Spade wrote a great missile article titled "Launch This" that appeared on pp 52-53 of the June 1995 issue 21 of the SubCommittee Report.

Back issues of the SCR are available for $7.50 plus a little postage from SC membership chairman Don Osler - membership@subcommittee.com

Matt talks about building Propel powered missiles and the launch mechanism. The missiles are 1/2" CPVC. They had 1/8" thick plastic discs glued in each end of the tube and a balsa nose cone for flotation. To save space in the sub - instead of pulling a firing pin, the missile sits on a removable fixed pin in the bottom of the launch tube (there are 2 tubes side by side. The missile is lifted off the pin by an L-shaped servo operated lever.

Matt had two separate transmitters and receivers running his boat with two guys working them. One guy hovered the boat, the other guy launched the missiles. This was depicted in one of Ray Mason's classic SubRegatta videos. Contact Ray at rayrpm333@aol.com

I remember Mike Dory saying one time - regarding his torpedoes - to not store the firing pin the the nozzle since it tends to stretch the opening and it won't stay in under pressure.
