Happy Easter Everybody - Spring is here!

They are predicting 70 degrees plus here in the great white north of Minnesota. Soft water will be here soon...Woo Hoo! What are you other ice-locked sub builders doing do get ready?

After navigating through a deadly minefield, the USS PEEPFISH, skippered by Chick McPeep, launches a torpedo against evildoers in the classic WWII submarine film "Run Silent, Run Peep."

    Yeah spring is here! The

Yeah spring is here! The rain this weekend caused a lake to form in the backyard, 2" of water in the basement & the roof to leak over my bathtub. Also the bag pool I use for dive testing is deflated to about a foot of water & is full of leaves & branches. Yardwork will keep me away from subs for a while!

One competitor calls it “the glory of Peeps diorama supremacy and world domination.” We just call it the fourth annual Pioneer Press Marshmallow Peeps Diorama contest. In any case, we r…

        I was "lured" into doing

I was "lured" into doing "Run Silent, Run Peep" by a friend at work.

Susan Omoto, who has entered and won just about every crafts contest at the Minnesota State Fair, has worked in the film industry and is a creative genius, but (by her own admission) isn't so hot in the still photography department.

The original plan was for her to do most of the work on whatever diorama we decided on, and I would pretty much just just take the photo. As it turned out, work on her Masters thesis got in the way. Since she didn't have time to work on a Peeps Diorama this year, I thought I would give it a try.

I wanted to do something submarine- related (what else is there?) I took a child's 3D submarine puzzle and assembled only one side of it so there would be room for the Peep skipper. I added a little ship's wheel to give him something with which to "con" the boat.

The "mines" are bunny Peeps riddled with round toothpicks to represent the mine's "horns". They are anchored in the styrofoam seafloor with twisted wires. The background is dark blue foam board from the art supply store.

Cotton on a hidden wire poking out the back of the Crayola creates the illusion of the prop wake and water slug on the torpedo. Susan fashioned the little hat for Captain McPeep from white modeling clay (after my whining drove her nuts enough to want to get me out of her office.)

Seeing the high level of quality of the other entries, I am surprised and pleased to have won.

I would like to thank Susan and the Academy of Peeps Diorama Arts and Sciences. I will proudly display my toothbrush and whatever other St. Paul Pioneer Press swag I receive ...

Last weekend was nice. Go figure!!
I thought I would share this photo sent to me. You think you have a hazardous place to run your sub. The wildlife here is a KILLER!!
          Have a great holiday!! BD.
