virginia?? - What's up with the hull

I've been looking at the 3d models of the NSSN at
http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ship/nssn.htm and have noticed that it has growths on the side of the hull. Does anyone know what they are, and what they are used for?

Are you perhaps referring to the 3 'patches' along each lower hull side?

Those are the flank array sensor pods. This type of sensor suite first showed up on the Seawolf class.
