    Whose IJN sub is this?

Jeff LaRue got an offline query about this sub, prompted by the photo of it that appeared in the Sept issue of the SubCommittee REPORT. Does anyone know who owns it? I suspect it belongs to the fellow in the photo (Canadian?) but I don't know that for a fact.

      Thats Bruce Martin's Sentoku Type

Thats Bruce Martin's Sentoku Type I-400, aircraft carrier sub. Bruce is a member of SubComOn from Thorold Ontario. (Yes that's him in the picture) I believe it is in 1/48 scale, you can see a model kit of one of the three aircraft it carried sitting on the table in front. This is a marvelous model, he did have it running at the Subregatta. I have been surprised there hasn't been more comment about it because it is so well done and such a unique subject. Watched the Discovery channel documentary about how the US Navy sank all these so they wouldn't get into the hands of the Russians at the end of WWII. Until the nukes came along these were the largest subs ever built.

          Here's another shot I took

Here's another shot I took of the launching. What impressed me the most is even Ted Scriven's got excited about seeing it in the water. So much so he actually handed over the controls for his Type IX. Couldn't believe it I got to run her for a good half hour.

            Sorry folks, but that's definitely

Sorry folks, but that's definitely not an I-400 class sub. The aircraft hanger is all wrong for an I-400, as is the conning tower and the bow. For example, the I-400 had 8 torpedo tubes in the bow, not 6 as this one has.

This looks like a beautifully done Type B1 class IJN sub, perhaps using the Scale Shipyard 1/72nd scale kit...

              I agree, not an I-400

I agree, not an I-400 class sub. The hangar on I-400s was much larger, even offsetting the conning tower to port. Here is a photo for comparison:

The sub displayed looks like a Type B to me, but I cannot be more specific than that.

Thank you Carl. Lees (Scale Shipyard) I 19 is a beautiful Hull to work with. When I built mine it was pre internet and getting references material on IJN subs was hard task, It was more like fitting a puzzle. Now with the net and all the new Ghakken IJN sub books, Its another world.

The sub is Bruce Martin's I-19, a 1/48 scale hull from Scale Shipyard. If you think it looks good on the outside, you should see the workmanship on the inside. First class, some day I hope I can do as well as Bruce. Great guy too.
