This "torpedo" was seen on the BBC's tv series Trawlermen that was shown recently. Too small to be a torpedo tho , about 3ft long and 6-8" diameter. Looks more like what I think a noise maker / sub launched decoy would look like.
If you look closely on the 3rd photo you can see rudder/control fins on the 4 struts that hold the screw cover. As far as i've been able to figure this is an AUV with a changable scientific package. Either camera , sonar , etc with built in GPS.
I'll have to get photo's of a mate of mines PHD "project". He works in the Hydrographic dept at the Marine Laboratory in Aberdeen and he helped to design and built an AUV for doing under ice fish stock survey's in the Antarctic. This was 9 years ago ( and guess what Chris that did this is German , go figure lol ).
