Nautilus SSN-571 info needed - Tom? Boss subfixer? Anyone?

Can any of you EB knowledgable folks tell me when the stern of the Nautilus went from looking like this]http://www.frontiernet.net/~geprot/nautilus%20a.jpg[/img]

    to this]http://www.frontiernet.net/~geprot/nautilus%20b.jpg[/img]

The first photo is just prior to launch on January 21, 1954. The second, according to NavSource, is from her first full overhaul in May 1959. Looks like the screws were changed to 7 blade by then too. Her first refueling was done in '57. Was the extendeded tail added on at either of these events? And why? Anybody know for sure?
    Thanks.

    1959 , was the refit

1959 , was the refit , and to the best of my knowledge , the 7 blade screws and the tail cone were added to increase efficiency of propulsion and the cone to decrease cavitation ! That is my plan for my model anyway Sir . Have acquired a lot of pics and info on the boat for my build , but so much is still not know , and true Shipyard Plans are still top secret , The best thing to do is go the the Boat and the Museum if you can and recearch, recearch, all you can , if possible ! I am planing a trip their in October. Any thing I have you may need , just ask and if I have it we will get it to you . The NAUTILUS has a very special place in the heart for me , and I am about to start the detailing of my scratch build model . BS

      Thank you for your offer.

Thank you for your offer. Subron 8 is contemplating a 571 scratch build as a group project. We have visited Nautilus and the Museum on a couple occasions, but without enough time available for serious research. Photos taken of the boat offer limited detail. I took some of the bow deck, but I'm not certain that the conversion to a museum ship preserved all the same features as when she was still commissioned. Aft of the sail, the deck is hardly accessable for pictures at all.

So what we lack are details of the various topside hatches, lockers, cleats, forward vent holes etc. Also, we could use the layout of the mast locations atop the sail. In the several dozen photos we have collected off the web, little can be made out in these areas. Any light you can shed in this regard would be most appreciated!

E-mail received. I find the slide show quite interesting. You were able to get much better close-ups than I did, and they certainly will be will be very useful. I look forward to seeing your other ones. Thanks again!

Oh, and yes, the 598 sail is also an item of interest to me. Thanks for including it.

                To expand a little on

To expand a little on what Tom said, Ask for the drydock print. This should not be classified in any way and should give you bottom details. If that doesn't yield anything try terms like blocking. Over the years and depending on who drew the plans the terminology could be different. Also ask if they have a plan index in something like excel format or something and if they can e-mail you a copy. This would allow you to browse what they have and call them when you know what you need.
                Hope this helps.

                  Believe it or not any

Believe it or not any Nuclear Sub plans, Ship Yard Type as in line drawings are still Classified ! Wendy Gulley is a very nice , and was able to send some photos to me of what they have on file , including plans form four different fellows , Jim Christley`s being the best !! She is not permitted to do recearch for us ! I however did not ask , or did I know about any files of the bottom they may have , and would be very interested to see them ! I had a very experienced and good guy search the place to find photos fore me , he did SUPER JOB , and wanted a model for his time , so he gets the first one I make . And like George, I to would like all I can get in photos , after all it is the only tool a scratch builder has at times ! BS
