Man drowns while trying to rescue RC boat - A word to the wise...
The story as reported by the Miami Herald]A man drowned in Hialeah, trying to save a remote control boat
By ANDREA TORRES atorres@MiamiHerald.com
A 31-year-old man drowned Monday evening as he attempted to rescue a motorized, remote control boat in a lake at Hialeah's Amelia Earhart Park, 401 East 65th St.
The man was using a raft to paddle into the middle of the lake to get the disabled boat, but the other boats didn't stop the race. One accidentally rammed the raft, puncturing it and causing it to deflate, said Jesse Casales, a spokesman for Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
Apparently the boat that hit him was racing several others, they didn't stop the race when the guy went out for the disabled boat, and one of the racing boats 'lost control' and hit him. So it wasn't an issue of them not seeing him. The article notes that they should have stopped the race, AND the guy should have had a PFD if he was going out in water, let alone if he couldn't swim.
The lake where the accident happened is a North American Model Boating Association registered site. Apparently the guys running the boats weren't NAMBA members or didn't follow the safety guidelines in the NAMBA rulebook. This is the type of incident that causes insurance rates to go up, and the potential loss of lakes to run models in.
