Bill is doing a lot better - Bill Marks update 4/29/2006

Today Bill was taken off the sedative he was on and he woke up fully—the old Bill Marks was right there! He’s VERY unhappy with the respirator tube, but that will probably come out tomorrow—and he knows that he has to relax and not fight it. When the nurse said, “Hey Bill, are you feeling OK?”, Bill shook his head “NO!’ and rolled his eyes to show that he certainly does not. He’s answering all my questions by nodding or shaking his head. I just talked to his nurse, and he’s having a good night.

All of his vital signs—heartbeat, blood pressure, etc.-- are excellent. He is still having dialysis, but though his output of urine is small, it’s now clear pale yellow.

He’s making progress, but he still has a long way to go. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers, and I’ll keep you posted.

    Love,
    Pam

I received this email from Pam today, things are looking better.

    Hi,

Bill’s making slow progress. He’s still on dialysis, but he’s making MUCH more urine now, and the nephrologists say that’s excellent news. He’s also still on the ventilator, which is very uncomfortable for him, but today his surgeon said that he may be able to come off the thing as early as tomorrow. He’ll be much relieved—he wants so badly to get out of bed and sit in a chair, but can’t yet.

Dolly arrived today for a two week stay. I’m so glad she’s here. I’d love to have both of the girls here, but I’ll settle for one!

As I mentioned earlier, please don’t worry if I don’t return your calls—I’m just not getting them on the answering machine, and the house phone keeps hanging up when I answer it [Bill “adjusted” it before he went into the hospital. ]. Just keep trying! In the meantime, I’ll send updates via e-mail.

Please keep Bill in your prayers and thoughts.
    Love to you all,

    Pam

    Hi All,
I just received this email from Pam, looks like Bill is improving
but it is slow going. If he gets off of the ventilator he will be
able to eat and drink, but then he is in the hospital.
So it will be liquids for about 2 days..................

      GOOD NEWS!!!!

Bill’s ventilator tube was removed this noon! He is talking—although he’s very hoarse--and very happy to have the thing out of his throat. He’s doing very well and will see the physical therapists tomorrow—he’ll be getting out of bed for the first time in two weeks. He feels very exhausted, he says, and has no appetite—normal for this kind of surgery. He’s still getting dialysis. He has lost nearly forty pounds. But all in all, things are looking good. If all goes well, he’ll be out of the ICU in a couple of days.

I’ll keep you posted. A million thanks for your prayers and good thoughts. I believe they are really helping pull him through this ordeal.

Lots of love to you all,

      Pam
