    woah been a long time

Man it has been a while. I was a member of the subcommittee in my early 20's and built many model conversions then a 1/48 scale skipjack form scrath in those days it was a trugle for me to tap all of my resources to make parts. well I sold my skipjack 6 or 7 years ago to buy and restore a wwii jeep and become envolved in vintage vehicle restorations. Well my jeep is done and I am still working on more. Currently looking for a halftrack by the way.

I am really excited about this revell fleetboat comming out. and being that my parts bins are full of stuff form my submarine days I am ready to put those surpluss clippard valves, subtech electronics and other seals and stuffing bits that I collected many years ago in another sub.

While I recognise many names here still I see them all over the place. I see there are many forums for subs now. rc groups, sub pirates, and the subcommittee. There anre many new vendors for misc stuff, and WTC's. this is all great stuff.

10 years ago we couldn't post pictures very easily. we had to wait for the SC report to come out. I should have kept my membership all those years just to stock the library and keep up on all the interesting projects you guys were working on.

I rember there were many political scuffles on the board so many years ago. It looks as if things havn't chainged much. Is that the reason for 3 differant message boards? while the hobby must be growing since the last I tinkered in it. I still see the same names on all 3 boards.

here is a question. I uesd to be interested in uboats. I used to dream about building and owning a uboat. so I have many reference books. and kept up on the modeling sceen enough to order the revell uboat. but alass it sits in the attic. I am not interested in the enemy stuff anymore. I want as many reference books on fleet boats as I have on uboats but they just don't seem to be very many. Is there one, at least one must have book on fleetboats that will help me detail the revell model once it is releaced?

    Hey Pat - Welcome back.

Hey Pat - Welcome back. As you noted - the more things change, the more they remain the same. Most of the guys go to all the sites. Kind'a like bar hopping.

The SubCommittee is still going strong. Great guys, fun events, a new and improved SCR coming and a website upgrade on the drawing board. We have back issues of the SubCommittee Report if you would like to get caught up! Just drop an email to membership chairman Don Osler at membership@subcommittee.com and he can get you the prices and so on.

Tom Walkowiak of http://www.floatingdrydock.com/ has always had the bible for fleetboat builders - the Gato and Balao planbook. I just checked his website and it says it is currently out of print, however. Perhaps posting on note on the SubSwap message board of this site will find someone who is willing to part with his copy. I hope once the Revell kit comes online, Tom can be convinced to start publishing it again. I suspect all kinds of vendors will start releasing upgrade decks, WTCs and other goodies for this nice big model.

Once again, welcome back to subs - now get out there and build something!

    Best regards,
    Tim Smalley
