So long - it was nice while it lasted

    All,

Despite Tim's sweet announcement to the contrary, I have been quite skillfully and politically out-maneuvered and removed from the SCR. I am no longer Managing Editor, or Advertising Editor. Under the pretense of "helping me", the Executive Committee -- including myself -- were convinced to support paying Susan to take over the SCR on a "temporary basis". But when I expressed my desire to complete the March issue myself, it was made clear that my returning as Managing Editor whenever I wanted was not welcome.

The sad thing is I was ready to resign as editor anyway. I deeply regretted not getting the magazine out on time, and recognized that the membership might be better served by someone else. Furthermore, given my job constraints, I wanted to spend more of my free time with my family. My hobby must come after my family, not before. I was going to put my resignation in the March issue, but was willing to stay on as Managing Editor thru the Dec issue to allow time for someone else to take over and come up to speed. Even more sad, if I had been asked to resign I would have quite willlingly done so. I stated in this message board back in September that I would gladly step down if someone else stepped forward to take over.

I am therefore resigning from the SubCommittee. This will be my last posting to the SubCommittee message boards.

I stepped in as Managing Editor when Jeff LaRue was fed up and had had enough. He was going to drop it on the floor and let the chips fall where they may, which everyone was convinced would lead to the death of the SubCommittee. I stepped in because no one else would. I didn't want the SubCommittee to die, and I did the best I could given my job constraints. I do apologize to the membership for being unable to get the magazine out on time. I'm sure the membership will be better served by a paid professional than by a well-meaning volunteer.

I enjoyed getting to know many of you, especially my fellow members of SubRon5. I am proud to call the many wonderful people I met thru SubRon5 my friends, and hope to see you again at this year's FunRun.

I am also grateful to those who helped serve as the SCR staff, many of whom are also SubRon5 members. You guys are terrific. I'm sorry never got to meet many of you, and hope that perhaps our paths will cross someday.

Effective immediately, all matters regarding the SCR, including advertising, must now go directly to Tim Smalley.

    So long,

    Carl

    I stepped in as Managing

Well, since my name got used in Carl's post.....

The reason that I left the position as editor was not that I was 'fed up', but rather that my day-job work schedule over the previous several years had gotten progressively worse to the point that I needed to find a different way for the SCR to get completed on time.

It's also a bit unfair to say that I was going to just 'drop it on the floor' when I went through an almost 18 month process of working with the EC to find a replacement. Most probably do not realize that Carl was the second person to step forward and volunteer for the job. He was the second person that I worked with in a transition period.

What would have happened if Carl had not stepped forward? That's hard to say in hindsight.....but I can say that one way or the other the SCR would have continued to be published on time.

All of this has no bearing on the crux of Carl's announcement, however I feel strongly that I need to clarify that one statement of his.

        Carl, I am sorry you

Carl, I am sorry you feel that way. There was no attempt to get you out. We were trying to help by giving you a respite by having someone come aboard to do the mundane and a huge time eating part of the job - that is, the layout of the magazine. I didn't ask you to resign because we didn't want you to resign.

In our conversation early last week, I assured you that you would still be a voting member of the Executive Committee and would be welcome back in a more active role as your work schedule permitted. You thanked me several times - I thought we had come to a meeting of the minds. If you had questions or concerns I wish you had said something at that time.

Several days later (yesterday) you told the EC that youwanted to do the March issue after all, and would assist with the transition until December at the latest when you were then planning on resigning as editor - as you had been thinking about doing for some time.

By then I had already told Susan that she would be doing the March issue from what I gathered from our call earlier in the week. I mentioned to you that it was going to be a little awkward, but I would tell Susan that she wouldn't be starting doing the layout until the June issue. I didn't mean that your offer to do March wasn't appreciated. If you gathered that, I apologize.

To reiterate - she won't be the editor - she will be doing the layout and design work only. There will still be an editor who is a member of the EC. They just won't be bogged down by the huge job of doing the layout and design. They will retain the responsibility for pulling together each issue of the SCR, handing out assignments to the other proof readers and so on.
This should speed up the process of getting the magazine to the printer and remove a big work load from the editor.

        =================
        To the members -

I'd like to assure everyone that the SCR will continue to be produced and we are working to get it back to a more timely publication date. Carl's decision to withdraw will accelerate the process of finding a new editor. As part of the now changed transition process, Jeff LaRue has agreed to assist the EC in getting the SCR back onto a regular production schedule. A big thanks to Jeff for once again volunteering to help.

        Tim

          Carl,

          Ditto Paul's comments above. My

          Carl,

Ditto Paul's comments above. My personal thanks for your very hard work, and I would be remiss if I didn't say -- very sincerely -- that I hope you'll reconsider. I do know this is a highly charged, very personal decision, and I fully understand your reasoning and recognize your absolute right to take this stand. So believe me, I'm not positing my "please come back" lightly. But I do hope you eventually will, even if only as a fellow member instead of the dedicated editor we knew you to be.

I very much look forward to our annual SubRon5 fun in August. See you then, buddy.

          Best wishes,
          JeffP

            All,

            I've exchanged several emails with

            All,

I've exchanged several emails with Tim, and believe that I made a mistake. The way things were done led me to draw the (erroneous) conclusion that I had been the victim of some clever politcs. However, after communicating with Tim, I now believe that this was not the intention, but rather an unfortunate coincidence of timing. So I feel some apologies are in order.

Tim, you have my sincere apology for saying I'd been had by politics. I'm sorry I misunderstood your intentions, and ask for your forgiveness.

I also owe a sincere apology to Jeff LaRue. Jeff, I'm sorry I worded things the way I did. I did not mean to imply that you were abandoning the SCR when I took over as editor. I was upset when I wrote my post and did not take the time to word things properly. Please forgive me.

For the record, everything Jeff said in his reply was completely true, and Jeff bent over backwards at times to keep the SCR going. The entire membership owes him a major debt of thanks for his tireless efforts on behalf of the SCR.

Finally, I owe an apology to my fellow members for any and all trouble this posting has caused.

In light of these new developments, I have decided to stay in the SubCommittee. However, my resignation as editor still stands, and Jeff is still taking over as editor. I simply can't get the magazine out on time, and the membership deserves better than that. With the new layout person to help him, I believe Jeff can get things back until control in a hurry.

However, the March issue is still going to be massively late. Please understand that this is entirely my fault and is no way a reflection on Jeff. The membership is lucky to have Jeff back at the helm of the SCR, and also to have Tim serving as president. Please give them your full support as they continue to serve the SubCommittee.

            Sincerely,

            Carl

Hey Carl, I do not know you, but I have a lot of respect for you. It takes a lot to get up and say what you did. I can sympathise with what you are saying about not having time. Hope all goes well.
