    New member saying HI

    Hi all
    Mailed in my membership last week and thought id stop in and say hello to everyone. I live in south jersey and wonder if any other members are in the area. Most of my r/cing has been with nitro boats trucks and was a member og the IRCWCC (the guys who shoot there ships with the bb cannons).
    Now that im getting older i want a relaxing r/c hobby and this looks like the ticket.I have 2 sets of plans that ill be picking one to make a plug and mold from the 1/72 sturgeon (greg sharpe palns) or the 1/96 ohio (drydock plans) not sure which to do first. sorry for the long post ,again i just want to say hi to everyone

          Welcome aboard John!

          I know a few people in the midwest, Subron6, that have been looking for a 1/96 Ohio. You may consider molding that plug of yours and you might be able to sell a few. Good luck, and good building. Post some pics of your progress.

              JOhn,
              I don't know how you

              [color=#000F22]JOhn,
              I don't know how you have done your plugs, or want to, but I make mine by screwing together a top and bottom half and the turning it on a lathe. Works great for the newer U.S. nuke because they're just long cylinders. After getting the initial cylindrical shape, I unscrew the two halves and mount them to oversized melamine boards so molds can be made off them when they're fully detailed and finished. At this point you could then add the upper silo cover area tothe top half, etc. That's my process, but you'd need a mighty long lathe for an Ohio.

              A lot of guys use the lost foam method. They make cross section pieces out of home insulating styrofoam, glue them all together, then finish shaping. Once the have the shape down, they glass over it, cut it in two, and disolve out the foam with acetone. They would then make a mold from these pieces.

              Look at this thread in R/C modeler for this second process]

                I had that Idea with the lathe but my atlas is only a 10x36 .I was thinks of useing silcon rubber just scribe a seem the lenght around the hull put it in a box the fill it up to the line pull it flip it put in another box and do the same thing only problem is that the Alumilite RTV is really exspensive.

                  You got it right for

                  You got it right for the process I use, building a two piece mold box. Here's a link to the material I use.

                  I use the Por-A-Mold hard so the sides will stand up on there own. But it took 4 gallons, $160, to do my 1/96 Virginia—www.geocities.com/submarineworks

                  But even if you could afford it for your Ohio, I think either using the Por-A-Mold Thixotropic backed up with something rigid, it's painted or spatula'd on like in Bob's Nautilus process, or a straight fiberglass mold would be best. Then there'd be no chance of it changing shape on you, is the way to go.
