Michael,
We all have to get our feet wet (figuratively and literally)when we go into this hobby. It takes a man to make an apology. Good luck with your model, your web site, and your lofty ambitions.
When I was 15 I was in school and hating it. It did little or nothing during the 60's to help with my ambitions to make rockets, planes, submarines and got to the Moon. And that's what I wanted to do then. Still do.
I also had a passion for subs. I received little encouragement to pursue any of these things from school or my family. Ya right kid. Get real. Sure you will now go take the garbage out. Do your chores and stay boring.
Don't ever give up. Don't listen to adults or your pears dim views of your dreams , work harder than you ever have on them and you can't fail. Most the greatest minds and inventors of this civilization were less than good students and blew off tradition and gave us everything from the A bomb to landing on the Moon. Albert was one of the worse students of them all.
I say give the young man some encouragement and he'll be building and designing good things we can all enjoy watching. Maybe learn from too. At 53 I'm still always learning. It's what keeps us young!
[b]A beginner's point of view ]
I am a beginner to rc sub modelling and am currently converting my revell Type VII C to RC.
I have spent an incredible amount of time searching for information on this build and I also felt that a good site with good tips (including photos) would have been more usefull than having read hundreds of newsgroup posts (as I did) and visiting loads of web sites.
In fact I finally got to a point where now I have been collecting all the information I could on this build (both static and conversion) and have created a CHM help file with photos and it's still growing.
I felt I had to do this because I want all the information I need, available to me in one place. As a beginner, this is very important to me because I don't want to have to go looking all over the place (again) for something I thought I saw 2 months earlier but can't remember where. I've got too many sub related web-sites bookmarked already to be able to affectively find specific information when I need it.
I also believe there are few web-sites that are very well put together and informative - and (as you say) Tim's is one of the few but I find it is not updated as often as I would like to see. (I call it the "woohoo" site and it's one of my favourites).
If you create the site that you are contemplating, I wish you the best of luck and would certainly be interested in taking a look.
I recently joined sub-committee as a full member and although it does not satisfy all of my requirements, I am more than satisfied with my decision.
Unfortunately, none of the information I have compiled belongs to me, so I would have to contact and obtain permission from every author who's information I have compiled - some of the info comes from forum posts and other info comes directly from existing web-sites.
I have already done some editing to improve readability and I certainly think it's a good idea to make such a resource available to other beginners
As an example, I bought Dave Welch's Type VII WTC kit. He supplies excellent images and a separate document which makes it a little difficult to read, so I reformatted everything into my CHM so text appears together with pictures and makes it easier for me to read and find information during my build. But in order to release my re-edited CHM, I would need to obtain permission from Dave first.
In the case of an RC Groups poster (U182), I took loads of info from his many posts concerning the Type VII build and basically recompiled it into a readable document. Again, I would need his permission also if I wanted to distribute my CHM.
These are just 2 examples, and there are a few more, however right now, I feel I would rather compile more information (about other sub builds also) and I also think it would be better if I first finished my first build so that I could contribute as well - at least I would be able to explain how NOT to do things when I really stuff things up.
Steve's (U812) scratch build on the type 17 is alreadly going to be on the site, and he has been more than helpful in the creation of SubAquaModels.co.uk.
If at some point you do wish me to publish it, just drop me a line and I'll upload it.
