    Could someone out there PLEASE tell me why WWII subs generally had two periscopes? Back-up? Different optics? A great many thanx.

    Some US subs had 3

    Some US subs had 3 periscopes. Generally one was the search scope, and one was the attack scope. The attack scope was fitted in a smaller diameter tube to minimize its wake. The search scope usually had a larger field of view for a given range than the attack scope. Here's a periscope manual.

      Attack and Nav Scopes.. Nav scope had higher definition and angle for star shooting etc. Some Boats had a 3rd scope for photo recon etc.

        Guys, which boats had third scopes? This is new to me. Were they boats attached to SpyRon?
