    Russian subs: flood ports

I would like to know how the ballast tanks flood ports looks like in a russian sub. Wayne Frey mentioned sometime ago that] or like this: [ X ] ?

    Any info available?

In Wayne's article about the Typhoon there is a picture that shows some kind of grating (with circular holes) in the port side of the stern of a Typhoon in the dry dock.

My main interest is on the Typhoon, Alfa, Akula and maily KILO.

    Thanks

    Gerwalk,
    The grating looks like

    Gerwalk,
The grating looks like a repeated (+). Very simple. Almost looks like an afterthought. I know for sure it is this way on most of the "grates", or openings on the Typhoon,Akula, and Alfa. The exeption would be the intakes on the Typhoon and Alfa, and possibly one or two vents without thinking. Majority are very crude looking. Almost like rebar. (used in concrete for reinforcement).

I like them crude! They are easier to model!!

Let me see if I understand correctly. Each flood port has a square shape. In each port there is just one longitudinal bar and one transversal bar? Or there are many bars crossing in each port? (I asked this because you mentioned "looks like a repeated (+)")

I did this little drawing to clarify the topic. Could you please tell me if the correct grating is the number 1 or 2?

The very detailed plans of the Typhoon from Bear Models shows a "no. 2" kind of grate though in one of the photos you published in the SCR a circular holes grating could be seen.

      Regards and thanks!

Some holes are bigger than others. Then the pattern repeats, like #2. Many are like #1.

          Thanks! I think I will

Thanks! I think I will use no. 2 for my Kilo. It's easier to put some copper mesh on 50 holes than cross bars on each one!!

Do you have any photo on this topic? Did you manage to recover your DVDs?

              Gerwalk,
              I have been doing some

              Gerwalk,
I have been doing some research on the Kilo as I am building one too, it is by far my favorite sub. Below you will find two links. The first one is a great shot of a Kilo that shows vertical bar covering the flood holes. The second link is to the Kilo photo gallery. The site is in Russian but if you put it into babelfish or have a friend that speaks Russian you should have no problem navigating the site.

                  Gerwalk,
Sorry for the confusion on my part and thanks for the link! I am affair I can’t help you on the flood holes below the waterline. I have not been able to find a good shot of them either.

                    You will love this photo!

You will love this photo! It's from a document from Dockwise (the company that transported 8 Kilos around the world piggyback on their monstrous semisubmersible ships)
What do you think about the oval hole with louvers? it's just a flood port or could it be somekind of stearing device (water jet)? This could explain the lack of an upper vertical control surface?

                      Gerwalk,
                      I think what you are

                      Gerwalk,
I think what you are seeing here is the auxilary propulsion system. The closed door in the upper middle of the pict. is the intake and the "oval hole with louvers" is the outlet. This system will only propel the boat at a few knots but can be used to get the sub home. It is more often used for mooring the boat.

                      By the way great photo!

[color=#000000]I thought about this too. But I thought that the auxiliary prop system would be something that comes out from the hull and retracts when not in use. This is very interesting and I think you are right. As I said, this can explain the very low rudder area of this sub]

                          Gerwalk,
The 1997 edition of Jane's Fighting Ships has a great Kilo section that explains the auxilary propulsion system. But I have never seen much information on it and this is the best picture that I have seen. In addition it is the only time that I have seen one of the doors open.

                            This device is a "super-quiet"

This device is a "super-quiet" propulsion device used for a range of speeds from 0 to 3-4 knts. Nothing to see with Clancy's red october stuff though....
Each tunnel has a small electric motor that will run a little turbine. You can see the closed door of the starboard tunnel that opens when this system is used.
