Hurricane Katrina - Remember those in need

Hello SubCom Members,

I am posting this link to the American Red Cross. As a group, lets all pull together and help those on the Gulf Coast. It truly looks like the best chance for relief will come from the General Public. Give what you can because the need will become overwhelming in the weeks to come. I myself have asked and prepared for a one month leave of absence from work to volunteer through my congregation if called upon. So, please do what you can to help...next time, it could be your neighborhood.

Having lived my life on the Gulf Coast and having seen a few hurricanes and tropical storms, I can tell you one of the big reasons people didn't "immediately" recognize the scope of this disaster is that it wasn't immediately apparent.

Typically, a storm blows through, the weather calms, people come outside the next day and begin to rebuild. However, Katrina was a 100 year storm in magnitude. And the damage due to flooding and public anarchy began to ramp up after the storm was over.

I don't think this is the time, or the proper forum, to discuss the effectiveness of individual leaders or organizations in response to this disaster.

What I do agree with, having been involved in it here in Houston for the past several days, is we can all help. Donations are a great way to participate if you don't live in the region. If you do live here, volunteer your time and talent.

Historically, the government is good at providing funds and poor at providing services. The collective efforts of ordinary citizens will accomplish the rebuild. They did it in Galveston in 1900 and we'll do it again in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama if we stay focused on the task.

My apologies for your having

My apologies for your having to take upon yourself the extreme burden of posting that link to the Red Cross here yourself. A delay of three days is inexcuseable, of course. I have been out of town with my family on holidays for the long weekend, and have only touched upon my message boards briefly, and haven't checked my email since Thursday.

I was not aware that my volunteer duties here as Webmaster precluded any possibilities of taking time off with my family. I'll keep that in mind for the next time I need some time off.

My sincere condolences go out to the victims of the disaster. My faculties are at the disposal of the SubCommittee if any of my efforts might help us make a difference down there. I've already donated through my local bank. Hopefully that money finds its way down there and makes a positive difference in the lives of those who need it.

You are doing a Great Job with the site! I just got a little worked up and this is where it ended up (happens to all from time to time.) My apologies to you. I was a little surprised that the topic of helping out didn't come up sooner. Oh well, I've channeled my energy towards getting down there to help out. Work has agreed to give me 30 days off to help with the relief effort.
