I don't know, but did you notice the American sub had the hull number 593? What a goof to make. I also found this on the imbd.com website]http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076752/trivia[/url]

Maybe the writer thought the accident worked in favor of the movie plot, maybe it was stolen not lost?

          I am sticking my neck

I am sticking my neck out but the British SSBN, HMS Ranger was an imaginary 5th Resolution class boat. The Russian looks like it was very loosely based on a Yankee, and the American SSN looks suspiciously like it was modelled on a British Swiftsure/Trafalgar class sub but had some planes superglued to the tower. In all fairness I agree with Boatbuilder as long as there was Barbara Bach who cares. Although there to my mind is a big clanger in the film K-19 where the film crew reckon they copied a Hotel class down to the last nut and bolt and in the DVD commentary they make a big deal of how they wanted it to be as real as possible but the Russian sub that comes to rescue them at the end looks remarkably like a modified British Oberon class diesel.

          All the best,
