"Ice Station Zebra" - what sub is this ?

Can anyone I.D. this submarine ? Which sub is it in real life, and how many of these were there if any in this class? Thanks in advance. Jeff Jones

    Jeff,

    That was the USS Ronquil

    Jeff,

That was the USS Ronquil (SS-396), a Balao-class sub. Check out some photos at this site Ronquil High Sail to see her in the late '60s.

p.s. I think there were 120 in the class, but I see different numbers from different sources.

        USS RONQUIL was used for

USS RONQUIL was used for the surface shots. The undersea shots were a model and I think it was based on the SKATE class boat. The RANQUIL was a diesel boat but the TIGERFISH was nuclear. I noticed even as a kid when the movie came out that the two boats were different in shape. Landlubbers wouldn't really notice I guess. I always wanted to know what happened to the model used in the SF shots.
