    Hi,

    I've seen a fair few

    Hi,

I've seen a fair few of these kits built up. Dave Metcalf purchased all of John Darnells old range of boats.

They build into decent enough models. I'll be honest and say that quality and detail wise they don't come upto the standards of, say, the OTW range.

However they are a lot cheaper , and with a bit of work, they build into a decent miniature replica of the fullsize article.

      Charlie,

      I had a Darnell type

      Charlie,

I had a Darnell type VIIC when I lived in England about twenty years ago. The hull and deck castings were pretty good for the time, weld seams molded in, etc, but there wern't any detail accessories provided at all. All the tower detail would have to be scratch built, as well as the guns etc. This could have changed since I had mine, so I'd ask the question of Metcalf directly.

As for the running gear, there was an air flask, a rubber bladder, and reversible steam engine pump which allowed the sub to dive and surface, and a WTC with a plex top that you had to scratch build as well. The running hardware consisted of cast planes and rudders, but all the brackets and guards also had to be scratch built.

The bottom line is I got a nice hull and deck, an OK tower, but very basic components. You'll need considerable skills to turn anyone of the old Darnell kits into a great looking sub.

        Yep, that's about it in

Yep, that's about it in terms of what you get with the Metcalf mouldings.

Consider it a hull, with a WTB (watertight box), which I'd replace with a cylinder anyhow.

As an added note, I don't think the boats come with the old USE steam pump, or any other hardware.

Most modellers end up replacing these items anyway.

          Hi have a Darnell VIIc

Hi have a Darnell VIIc that I am just finishing up if you want pictures. I agree that the details are light, but Engel does the access attaches for a u-boat 1/40th and robbe the bollards needed for the deck. Accurate Armour for the Deck and Flak gun. The Darnell is 1/40th Scale the same as the Robbe, so quite a bit can be used from other kit spares.

I have teh recabs ballast system, basically a swimming armband inflated by an electric pump. The access plates are perspex.

When painted it looks like it will be pretty good in terms of appearence and added wethering will probably give you a fair model.

Here a some pictures of various built up Darnell/Metcalf mouldings models.

These were taken in January at the London Model Engineering exhibition-

                U-class (I think)!

Type VIIc and U class in background. Type XXI is a Maurice Rickett/R&R engineering hull.

                Type VIIc.

X-craft is Metcalf mouldings model. The little Alfa is an unknown quantity!
