    U-boat anchors - Used?

This question popped up while surfing for pictures of U-boats, I'm sure that some of you have noticed this as well. Some pictures show boats without anchors located at the bow while some do have cavities in the forward hull to accomodate the anchors. How often were they used? There aren't that many pictures that show the anchors dropped, or is this another late-war configuration?

Any reading I've done on the subject seems to indicate that the anchor was "very rarely" used .... it seems reasonable, therefore, that as raw materials became scarcer the fitting of anchors may well have been discontinued altogether.

The only instance of a U-boat using an anchor that I've come across is when anchoring at Tenerife (Canary Islands) on the rare occasion when they stopped there.

It's not clear if U-boats were ever built without anchors. Based on the photographs available, as late as the Spring of 1945, the Type XXI's were still being built with anchors.
