Russian subs colors - Article in March '05 SCR: wrong!

Reading Herr Wernecke scratch-building Alfa article in the March '05 SCR I was surprised to read]http://www.subcommittee.com/forum/icon_mad.gif[/img]

I'm not saying that the Alfa lower hull was never "grey", black, or green just that saying they were always grey or that all the russian subs lower hulls are grey is WRONG.

He was misinformed for sure. Even in black and white, if you look at the my Alfa drydock shots from last year, you can see the lower is a different color.
I tend to belive Sergey. He drove one. The Alfa had black,red, and green lower colors at different points. The green was due mostly to chemicals, zinc , I think to slow marine growth.
Also, the hull taper is wrong, and hatch location, which I confirmed is the same on all Alfa's. Prop lacks the attenuator., and the intakes are absent.He used some dated information, based on what I think was Merrimen's drawings that Sharpe uses.
The up side is he did a #### of a job!! It looks to be a well made kit. Nose looks correct, Sail looks mostly correct.
I do like the track he put on it.

[color=#000000]I agree, the work he put in doing his boat is amazing that is something I can't deny! The absense of the notorious water intakes or the hatch position you mentioned are very conspicuous too.

The B&W photos from your article shows a lighter color in the lower hull different from what you would expect from fouling or weathering, that's for sure!

What bothers me a lot is that he made an statement saying NO RED HULLS for the entire russian fleet! Now there is bunch of modelers that could be confused by this. I wonder if someone can publish an article in SCR saying that ALL the U-booten had red hulls because he asked an old u-boot crew and the guy told him]

I have color dvd's of

I have color dvd's of Russian submarines (Akula,Delta, Oscar,etc) in drydock showing the red lower primer.
I do not want to come across as flaming him. I am glad someone came out with a rusky boat. Everybody knows I love em. I would still like to see a Delta IV in 1/96 scale

May I suggest that someone (Wayne?) write a polite review of the article in question and point out where the difference of opinion lies?

When I get a moment, I will sit down and do that.
I want to say going into this that I am not "zinging" anybody.
Building a kit at ALL has my respect. I will show the differences that I know are true. Even with the pictures, I did not catch everything. Merrimen and Thor spotted several things I missed when the pictures came out.
I do enjoy the chase though. It is fun turning up new stuff.
