    Yes, every U-boat had (has)

    Yes, every U-boat had (has) a unique number. Prior to the beginning of hostilities, the number was painted on the sides of the conning tower. Unlike current practice, these numbers were not removed when at sea. Once the war began, the numbers disappeared permanentely.

    Photos of U-boats with numbers painted on the tower are almost certainly from the pre-war period. (I'm not including the immediate post-war period when the Allies marked each boat for identification purposes prior to Operation Deadlight and the dividing up of boats as war prizes.)

    Cast plaques were also attached to either side of the bow, but this practice appears to have been discontinued at some point during the war. (Probably based on contract/design changes initiated once war began)
