2005 Builder's Survey - "On the Ways" - What's on Everyone's Workbench?
Work and other things slowed me heavily this past year. But,
my Alfa with working torpedos should be ready for warm weather( thanks Chuck!!).
I still have a 1/72 Akula II hull, a 1/96 Copeland Typhoon, and a Revell Type VII to do.
Last year I managed to get my OTW Seehund in the water. This sub uses a hybrid/custom dive module that I built....the ballast system is based on the Engel piston, yet this is not a dry hulled boat! I've got all the benefits of control that the piston provides, but none of the drawbacks of the typical piston dry hull boat.
This year, I'm aiming to get the two torpedoes working, including the addition of R/C gear to each to make them steerable!
Photos will be coming shortly as I am planning on submitting an article for the SCR.
Well being of crowded mind and shallow of pocketbook
and a Shelby Dodge car to finsh restoring..
my Kilo and Seawolf I need to finish up, my Revell VII, I need to work the final bugs out for the batteries. and then I have a second one to build.
My I19 sub is wanting to be finished and I have found the ESC that will work well..
Also have 3 XXI Uboats , one being from revell and the others from Trumpeter..
My Alfa is still the drydock. I am getting closer. I have to finish up the linkages to the wtc. I would be farther along if my first radio worked with the failsafe, but since it didn't I was forced to buy another radio which might be ready sometime this month but I am not holding my breath.
Well, I'm FINALLY getting to the refit of USS Batfish, my 1/48 fleetboat. I've completely gutted her, and am working my way forward inspecting, rebuilding, repairing, or replacing every componant. I hated to do it, but I forced myself to throw away a perfectly good radio. Yeah, okay, it was older than my kid in college, and was a pre-gold sticker wideband dinosaur, but it still worked. So what if it was banned at every meet i went to because it took out 2 channels on either side of my frequency?
Anyway, I'm documenting the whole process, and will be working it up as an article for The Report.

Last year I built a Thor Design PERMIT in about two months, already had an equiped WTC from my first sub. Now I'm working on two Scale Shipyard 1/96 scale hulls;a USCG 378' HAMILTON Class WHEC; and a GATO/BALAO Class fleetboat. I have one of the Small World Models WTC's for the fleetboat. I've narrowed the specific boat down to one of 28 built at Manitowoc, WI.
Two projects. One sub and one Seabex (graupner). I know it's a sin, but sometimes you need a simpler boat that doesn't need all the seals and divetanks. The sub project is a deutsche U-boot (type 7) kitbashing. In short. I don't like the Robbe sealing. I made the hull 3 to 4 mm thick and I'm trying to convert it to a toplid system (the ENGEL-way). This way I have a lot of more room and I can use two Engel-divetanks (TAE).
Hope to finish one of the two halfway in the season.
As of this date, I'm still working on my 1/48 Engel fleet boat, modeled after the USS Silversides. I had hoped it would be ready for the St. Louis Admiral's Regatta last September -- now I'm hoping to get it ready for the SubRegatta in Carmel in July. Unfortunately, it still has a long way to go.
I have most of the interior work done, or I should say, had it done until Engel came out with a new retract mechanism for the bow planes. So I'm back to hacking and trying to figure out what I need to do to get them installed.
I have made progress on modifying the conning tower to more closely resemble the fairwater on the Silversides. That involved adding a tail onto the aft end of the kit's conning tower.
So progress is being made. Eventually I'll get this thing to sink!
Got my Nautilus almost finished up, progress can be seen on http://captainnemo12.tripod.com/nautilus. Also working on a type VIIB U-boat, U-52. The snow is melting here, spring should be coming up soon .
I have reloacted from California to North Carolina so progress on my 1/32 LA boat has been stalled. I am now starting back on it and I am working on the software driven radio control (operates on the 450 Mhz amateur band, digital data methods used) unit and will shortly begin to layup the hull. I had to build a work shop here before starting back on the project. Insulation and drywall is all that remains.
A plug for Greg Sharpe. In the moving process I lost my old LA hull drawings and ordered a set from Greg. If anyone is thinking about buying his drawings have no fear as they are EXCELENT quality drawings. Thanks Greg.
