    Virginia class question

Can someone please tell me what the protrusion is under the bow of the Virginia class boats, and what shape it is?

    Eckloss,
    It's called a "chin array"

    Eckloss,
It's called a "chin array" it's for listening. As far as what shape is it, kinda round (circular) in the front and then it blends into the hull. Sorry if my answer sounds vague. You can see a pretty good picture of it at FX Models website, just look for their submarine model section.

      ...and I seem to remember

...and I seem to remember that the chin array on the Virginia-class is specifically designed for littoral work.
