    Brian,

    I have been in search

    Brian,

I have been in search of this information since 1993 with absolutely no luck what-so-ever. I have information on this class a foot thick , but no information on flood vents. The Navy is extremely tight with that information on this boat for some reason.

        This is not difficult. Here

This is not difficult. Here is an illustration of the vents and drain holes. The drain holes are roughly 1 x 3 feet.

The location cannot be placed exactly without docking plans of course, but there is an easily logical way to deduce their locations based of the rough location of the ballast tank bulkheads and the pattern known of other American submarine SSN and SSBN's. The great Jim Christley taught me this.

The flood drains were developed and first tested on Albacore AGSS-569, retro fitted to Nautilus (SSN-571) and Seawolf (SSN-575), and used up to the present day except for the Seawolf (SSN-21) and Virginia (SSN-774) classes. These drain vents may in fact be in use on Seawolf and Virginia....I am just not certain about that point.

These bottom vents allow water to drain freely without causing noise (helmholtz resonating) when the hull moves threw the water at speed.

Now to deduction.....know were to locate the flood drains by simply knowing the locations of the ballast tank bulkheads....also remember each bulkhead is divided down the centerline creating a starboard and port side tank. Place the drains at the tanks lowest point along the bottom so the water can drain out. On the Ohio's there are 12 ballast tanks. 6 (2x3) forward and 6 (2x3) aft bisected down the centerline. Place 3 drains at the bottom of each tank, but in the case of the ballast tanks fore and aft closest to the pressure hull midships put 5 sets of flood drains to each of those last 4 ballast tanks. A total of 44 flood drains. Find brass tubing following the same 3 to 1 porportions and insert them into the hull for uniform size and shape. If you plan to put the tiny vents in, suggest you try acid etching and bring a mirror for the static judges to view them with! Get out the files, you have work to do.
