So, may the pariah respond? You bet I stirred the pot. If it doesn't get stirred and get some people annoyed enough to start doing something instead of wringing their collective email hands, then this hobby - or at least this organization - will die.

Now, to Jim and the others - I attacked no one. I discussed no one's parentage, mental acuity, halitosis, or choice of pets. I disparaged no one's input or service. I disagreed with their policies. There is a big difference. And I think all those who have me incarnated as the Great Satan had better read the adage about stones and glass houses. That which I am accused of doing, you are doing.

Like I said, I disagree with various policies. Still do. I was the brunt of a couple flame wars, and I participated in a couple and I ignited one (well, now, two with me being burned in ethernet effigy here). I do not like censorship in such a manner as here. Disagree as you will, I have a right to my view. And I still contend that it is part of the reason participation here is so down from what it used to be. Again, disagree as you will.

Now, as to the avatar thing. It's my artwork produced entirely by me. I don't mind anyone using it - but I would prefer at least a minimal request for such. I did copyright it, yes. I had some other artwork stolen and marketed commercially and I am determined that won't happen again. How many of the people here who produce hulls or brasswork or decals or such would tolerate their work being purloined? My artwork is no less important to me. WHen I see someone using my work, I make them aware it is mine and it is legally protected. I never told anyone not to use it, I simply protected my rights. If someone doesn't like me cause of that, well, that's why I have a dog.

Now back to the Subcommittee. It had better do something or it will die. It better get out there in the public eye. As I see it, very little is being done to take advantage of those opportunities. What do I mean? How about this - I was part of the committe which recently hosted the IPMS Nationals in Phoenix. Several invitations were mailed to the Subcommittee to have a FREE presence there. No response. Considering we had over 700 registered entrants and over 2500 attendees, it would have been a PR boon. Take a look at RC Planes and what they do. We need to emulate that. EVen in small part. We have a "Nationals" every year. But why always in the same place? What about rotating it to other parts ot the country? Get the outsiders interested and involved.

And another thing - police the ranks. How many of us have been - excuse the term - ripped by unscrupulous dealers or individuals? Establish a board to follow that up and then post the results. Establish a mediation board which those who sell have to answer to if they wish to advertise with the Subcommittee. Pie in the sky? I don't think so. But then that's me.

And back to the whole censorship thing - I truly believe the baby got thrown out with the bilgewater. If you have someone who is abusive (seems that is why Matt Thor quit participating here - he got abused badly - but then I may have misunderstood that whole brouhaha), warn them and then suspend them. And don't do that just because their views may not jive with the mainstream. I am talking abusive. And, for those who wish to vent or to wish vicious sand fleas on the Arab terrorists or other such off topic diatribes, why not provide one more forum for just that? Most other groups do. Why not here. Then if Dave Merriman got on a rant -not that he ever did- just tell him to take it over there. But he quit posting when he was told his posts would all be subject to censoring. He objected to that and I don't blame him. Who, after all, censors the censors?

So, for those who have asked for my figurative and actual head on a platter, as well as all those who don't like me, have at it again. Come to Phoenix, I'll buy you a beer.

There's some important questions there - exactly what resources are required for each job? Maybe these could be listed in the previously-discussed "Help Wanted" section? eg.

1. For proof-reading, are articles plain text, Word, PageMaker etc?
2. For submission, what's the *preferred* article format. I know I've read before that several formats are acceptable, but what format will save the Editor most work?

The problem with commercial software is that, despite it usually being very good, unfortunately not everyone has the same programs. As for free/Open Source software, TeX is very powerful (and very scary) but OpenOffice would be a better solution. It has a pretty good word processer rather than a publishing package, but can read Word files quite well and can natively produce PDF output If it proves powerful enough, maybe this could meet our requirements? Standardising on one package would look much more consistent than trying to merge a bunch of differently-formatted PDF's together.

I have to invest less than 50 bucks, I am willing
to layout 1 or 2 articles per issue as well.

If the open office suggestion is workable at all,
I think something like that would be the ideal solution.
- does PDF
- one package
- but available on windows as well as linux
- free/lowcost
- looks a lot like Word, which we probably all use

That's actually a possible solution that I have been looking at for some time now. (...and given my spare time, it hasn't been a lot of time!) Right now I am trying to figure out how to 'translate' the basic SCR page template to an OpenOffice document template....or at least something close to it. I this can be done and the resultant PDFs that are produced are of sufficient quality, then we will have a good non-commercial solution to a page lay-up product.

If anyone is familiar with OpenOffice text document creation, I would really like to talk with them!

I've used OpenOffice a bit

I've used OpenOffice a bit in liasing with Sun Microsystems (one of my suppliers) as their corporate office suite is Star Office, of which OO is the free partner and is thus very similar.

The most "popular" non-native formats it reads are M$-Word (all varieties) and RTF (Rich Text Format). I've never used it for DTP, only standard word processing/presentations, but am more than happy to see what I can do. My e-mail is on my SubCommittee members info page.
