    Subs in Michigan?

    Hi guys,

I tried posting in the Midwest forum but got no responses. Sorry for the repost.

I am new where. I'd like to see a sub in person if possible. Are there any members near Fenton, Michigan who might show me their project? I would love to build a submarine.

    Thanks,

    Hello Graydon-

    Welcome to the world

    Hello Graydon-

Welcome to the world of R/C subs! I'd suggest you plan on attending the SubRon 6 FunRun in Carmel (just north of Indy) Indiana... we're still waiting to get the green light on an exact date (it'll be a saturday for sure), this will be announced in the SubRon 6 forum when decided.

There is usually a dozen or so subs running a variety of systems and plenty of folks willing to jabber for hours on the subject(s).

I'm in NW Central Ohio, and have a number of projects on the bench(es). What sort of thing(s) are you wanting to see or are of interest to you?? Nukes, fleetboats, uboats? I'll do my best to "set the hook!"

    Take care

    Matt

Its definitely best to see one in person. I traveled all over the eastern sea board to find them, and did drooled from a distance for over a year before I ordered a Thordesign Alfa.

        Matt,

        Thanks for your reply. Carmel,

        Matt,

Thanks for your reply. Carmel, In might be doable although it is a bit of a drive from Fenton.

I am probably more ambitious than I should be, but I think that all else being equal, I would like to build either a Los Angeles class or an Ohio class in a fairly large scale. I really like the idea of shooting missiles off eventually so I am leaning towards the big boomer. I think it looks cool too with the elevators on the tower and that long midsection with all of those missile silos.

Mostly, I'd like to learn about the best technologies to use and for what reasons. I have been reading as much as possible here and looking at all of the webpages of guys that have built their own and guys who supply kits. I am torn between buying a kit (especially if I were to find a half-built project for a good price that someone gave up on) and scratch-building my own. I have the ability to build things, with access to a lazer cutting machine, CNC machines, machine shop, and general fabricating equipment/supplies so scratchbuilding doesn't scare me. But, I also recognize the value in a comprehensive kit as I sell them for tube guitar amps in my amp business. Having everything in one box is a definite bonus.

I'd be willing to trade an 18W guitar amp kit for a sub kit if anyone happens to be into electric guitar...

        Thanks,

          Don't feel like the Lone

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger about the long drive Graydon - we have guys drive all the way from Minnesota, Missouri, Western Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, and even Alabama. Skip Asay has come out all the way from New Jersey for the last two Spring meets! There are 28 Michigan SubCommittee members listed in the roster that you receive once you join. There is probably at least one near you.

We do invite you to our next SubRon6 meeting in Carmel Indiana on August 28th. Anyone is invitved to come watch and SubCommittee members in good standing can run boats. See the SubROn6 forum for more info.

Hope to see you on Aug 28th!

            Indy is indeed a bit

Indy is indeed a bit of a drive for you, but it's your golden opportunity to see a real smorgasboard of subs before you drop a grand or trade an amp kit.

Nice amps, BTW. I just retubed my old carvin half stack with Sovtek 12AX7W's and a pair of GrooveTubes 6L6-GC's. So maybe if I bring my amp down to Indy you could set my bias for me? <grin> Maybe not, I didn't see any electric next to the pond, plus I still have to check with my Director of Activities (wife) and submit a request for Saturday leave. She will review my performance over the last week or so and make a determination.

            It's dubious at best.

              Safrole,

Thanks for the kind words. I love these amps. They sound great and they are a blast to build.

You should try the Winged C Svetlana 6L6s in your amp next time. They sound very sweet. The GTs are pretty close. I tried a quad of the new GTs in a customer's 100W a few months ago. They were very similar, but I thought the Svets were just a tiny bit better (to my ears at least.) Also, EI Gold pin Elite 12AX7s are very smooth in the preamp. I'd love to do a bias for you but I have never worked on one of those. I would take so long figuring it out, you'd wonder if I knew what I was doing.

I'll try to get to Indy. That does sound like fun.

              Tim,

With 28 Michigan members, surely there must be a bunch of guys local to the Detroit area that get together!?

                  Mark,

Thanks, I knew about the Silversides. Cleveland isn''t in Michigan, but close.

But, actually I was hoping to find someone with a model sub nearby that I could check out in person.

So far, I am leaning towards a Subtech Akula kit for it's extremely low price ($415 for the complete kit, inc radio!) It just seems like an excellent deal for a first timer. I'll build a Seawolf or a Boomer for a second project maybe.
