new sub-related web site - new sub-related web site

Hi everyone,
I had a great time at the regatta this year and have posted a short video and a still from this year's regatta on my new web site. When you get there, just click on the 'submarine' link on the top of the main page. Have fun.

Rick,
Great pics and videos. Google didn't get me there, but Yahoo did. It's interesting that the correct spelling is www.remotelyinteresting.com .

For those who don't know

For those who don't know "tknofile" - Rick Galinson is the builder of "The Visible Sub" clear R/C submarine that you have seen in many of the SubRegatta photos. Every year he comes out with new gadgets and gizmos for this baby - - if there is still an engineering prize at the SubRegatta - he should win it.

If you look at his website, be sure to click the other links. Since he works on Hollywood movie props (like the Dr. Octopus steel tentacle suit seen in the recent Spiderman film) - he has some very cool other stuff besides subs. - Paintball minigun, flame shooting minigun, "Whack A Skull" game, etc.

Way to go Rick!!!

oops....Art is right about the spelling. I posted the wrong address earlier. The correct address is ]www.remotelyinteresting.com

hope you like it

Incidentally, the sub's speed telemetry is intriguing. Curious about the sensor end of it. Is it reporting from a tachometer type sensor? GPS maybe? Thank you for your insights.

Hi John,
thanks for the great response. I'll be updating the pages soon with more pics and videos so check it out again sometime soon.

As for the speed telemetry, I am using a motorola differential pressure sensor. I think it is the MPX5050DP, but don't quote me on the number. The sensor has 2 ports on it and I'm using the same sensor on most of the other telemetry info as well. The sensor measures the difference between the air pressure on both ports and conditions that difference to a voltage somewhere on the range of 0 volts to +5 volts. This is then read by a Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) chip which converts the analog voltage to a digital value between 0 and 255. The ADC I am using is the 0838 from National Semiconductor, (again, don't quote me on the manuf.) This is an 8 channel ADC. The single channel ADC in the same family is the 0831.
The accuracy of the speed indicator on the video had not been calibrated at the time of the regatta. Actually, I still haven't done it yet...The reason for the delay is this]

Hello Rick, thank you for

Hello Rick, thank you for these specs. It is an elegant solution, seems to work something like an airspeed indicator with a pitot and a static reference. The processor is a PIC?

I built one of these systems with a Stamp II, using the conventional rev counter approach. The key to it was a tiny impellor developed and sold by SpeedTech for sailboards. It has a magnet molded in. You set up a Hall Detector (inside the hull) the sense each passage of N and S as the impellor spins. It is chiefly useful for sensing very low speeds. And it is draggy and un-scale looking.

Seems to be telemetered GPS type system might be very helpful for a sub, since it reports both speed and position. Specially if the sub, for some reason, got stuck in the mud... But I read somewhere that the resolution is quite not adequate for models, again assuming low speed operation.

Your presssure sensor seems ideal, beautifully well thought out, especially since the same type of sensor can return both speed and depth information.
