Research & Development - Place to brain-storm ideas!

[color=#000000]How about a thread on ideas you have had that might spur the talents of others to perfect or imbelish your idea.

    Here is one for starters]

Well, since I am a newbie to the rc submarine community, I have no experience to fall back on or base any idea on. But after reading many stories around about boats not coming back to the surface and not knowing their exact resting place, I had one idea.
What if you made a small capsule with a spring loaded lid that contained a rather long length of monofiliment line attached to some sort of bobber device? This capule would appear nothing more than a scale hatch on the sub deck. The hatch could be set to trigger if the radio lost contact thus sending the bobber to the surface.
You would then be able to pull the sub back to the surface or at least dive down to it's stranded position.
    Just a thought

      Great idea Mickm!
I did this on my Typhoon! Actually, what I did was use a small electromagnet to hold a floating cylinder in place. The floating cylinder contains a battery and a flashing red LED. When the cylinder is released, a pin at the bottom switches the LED on. http://home.earthlink.net/~ramius-ii/ (Rescue Buoy)

I like the idea of having an idea section.

Scott T's idea is valid and I would add the use of teflon tape as a surface for the magnets to rub against or the use of teflon tubing.

        Scott, I have to say

Scott, I have to say that is the best idea I have herd in a while. Call it (R&D Ideas). Everyone has ideas, some bonehead ones, some will pan out. You can start one and everyone can jump in and try to fine tune it. I love to do that with Bubbleheads in person. Just start going back and forth with ideas trying to figure out a problem. BRAINSTORMING! It's got my vote. Come on guys, what do you think? Dave.

          Very good design Ramius-II.
Biddave is correct,Brainstorming ideas are a very interesting part of any hobby.
If everyone will share an idea, everyone will profit and enjoy the thread.

                I think your pinger is

I think your pinger is a wonderful idea and a great unit. For me, if I have to dog paddle out to my sub, I'd like a clear destination point. Otherwise, I might require a pinger!

                  I finally returned to this

I finally returned to this thread. Here is a sketch of the magnetic coupling device. The words are small and may not be readable.
The idea is a magnet in the tube acting on a steel ring or magnet outside the tube to perform work without a seal on the rods.

Hope this works. Took quite a bit of effort to get this here.
Sketched it in AutoCad. Exported to a bit map. Converted to a jpg.
Had the webmaster change me from registered to member to get a web page.
Added to Subcommittee member web page.

Well the sketch didn't come out too big.
How do you guys get those big beautiful pictures?

Anybody have any ideas how to get a CAD drawing to show up at a readable size here?

                  Here is my members page.

The sketch is a little bigger if you click on it

                    Dear Ramius II, Many thanks

Dear Ramius II, Many thanks for the kind comments.

Can I put my "wouldn't it be nice" idea forward.

How about a method of tracking a sub when submerged (depth and compass direction would be good)

Radio is unlikely to be any good and has anyone got the fish finder type unit to actually give a useful display?

I like 'printing' my AutoCAD files to PDF for creating large viewable versions of the drawing.

Can you direct me where to learn how to print to PDF?
All I see in exporting a AutoCad drawing is too bmp, dxf, wmf
                        etc.

                        Thanks, Scott.
